Bayern Munich 0 Borussia Monchengladbach 3: Under-pressure Kovac now four without a win

    kWkD0zP.jpg

Bayern Munich's winless run has stretched to four games after Borussia Monchengladbach shocked the Bundesliga champions with a 3-0 win at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.

After winning his first seven matches in charge of the club, coach Niko Kovac has now failed to guide his side to victory in three domestic games on the spin – a run that leaves them four points behind early leaders Borussia Dortmund.

Kovac's men looked sluggish from the outset and found themselves two down after just 16 minutes, Alassane Plea and Lars Stindl – making his first appearance of the season – finishing emphatically past Manuel Neuer.

Robert Lewandowski had a goal ruled out for offside in the second period, but any dramatic comeback from Bayern would have been harsh on the visitors, who were deserving winners and added gloss to the scoreline late on through Patrick Herrmann.

The effect of Bayern's recent form on their confidence was evident early on and they were punished after 10 minutes when Plea whipped a wonderful finish into Neuer's bottom-left corner from 20 yards.

The hosts' misery was compounded just six minutes later when Stindl took full advantage of some haphazard defending. Neuer's short pass to Thiago Alcantara was intercepted by Jonas Hofmann, who teed up the Gladbach captain 15 yards out to fire a crisp drive into the bottom-right corner.

A shell-shocked Bayern finally woke from their slumber after the half-hour mark, Arjen Robben and Lewandowski forcing Yann Sommer to make two saves in quick succession, but they were unable to reduce the deficit before the break.

Kovac replaced Robben and Thomas Muller with Franck Ribery and Serge Gnabry at the interval, but they were unable to spark their side into life during a tepid start to the second period.

Bayern were denied a grandstand finish when Lewandowski's effort was ruled out for offside 20 minutes from time, before substitute Herrmann added a third – despite a VAR review – in the 88th minute, drilling past Neuer from eight yards.

Udinese 0 Juventus 2: Bentancur and Ronaldo extend winning run

    4823944-6247553-image-a-28_1538852350767.jpg

Rodrigo Bentancur and Cristiano Ronaldo got the goals as Juventus won 2-0 at Udinese to clinch a 10th successive victory across all competitions.

Ronaldo, who on Wednesday "firmly denied" rape allegations dating back to 2009, effectively put the game beyond Udinese just before half-time and it was plain-sailing from there for Massimiliano Allegri's men.Juve were dominant right from the start and capitalised when Bentancur and Ronaldo found the net four minutes apart.

The home side did go close on a couple of occasions, though they never looked capable of clawing things back, as Juve preserved their record of being unbeaten away from home in Serie A this calendar year.Udinese struggled to even get out of their own half in the first period and it was a surprise they kept it 0-0 for as long as they did.

Bentancur eventually broke the deadlock 33 minutes in, rising well to meet Joao Cancelo's glorious cross and head in.Ronaldo doubled Juve's lead soon after, shooting left-footed across goal and finding the bottom-right corner.

Udinese could have pulled one back just prior to the break, but Antonin Barak's 25-yard strike hit the post. Kevin Lasagna then went close in the second half, latching on to a free-kick and seeing his goal-bound effort cleared off the line by Emre Can, a half-time replacement for Blaise Matuidi.

Ronaldo could have got himself a second goal 16 minutes from time, but Simone Scuffet made a fine save with his foot to keep the effort out and Juve were unable to add further gloss to the scoreline as a late deflected Cancelo strike hit the crossbar.

Leicester City 1 Everton 2: Sigurdsson stunner gives Silva first away win

Gylfi Sigurdsson scored a brilliant late winner to hand Everton a 2-1 victory over 10-man Leicester City, their first away win of the Premier League season.Richarlison's fourth goal of the campaign in the seventh minute gave Marco Silva's men an ideal start, although Ricardo Pereira's first strike for Leicester five minutes before the break levelled the match.

Everton looked like favourites once again when Leicester captain Wes Morgan received his second red card of the season midway through the second half, and Sigurdsson's stunning 30-yard strike – his 50th in the Premier League - proved decisive with 13 minutes remaining.

Bernard wasted no time to make an impact on his first top-flight start, twisting his way past Pereira and Daniel Amartey and sending in a threatening delivery that compatriot Richarlison volleyed in from six yards, despite Kasper Schmeichel getting a hand on the cross.

Leicester recovered their poise from there and should have equalised, only for Jamie Vardy to fire a poor shot wide when he was sent clean through on goal by Wilfred Ndidi.

But the next Leicester counter-attack did produce an equaliser as Pereira, having been fed by Kelechi Iheanacho down the left, turned Jonjoe Kenny inside out and may have been surprised to see his left-footed effort beat Jordan Pickford at the Everton goalkeeper's near post.

Leicester's chances of victory took a hit in the 63rd minute when Morgan received a second yellow card for a challenge through the back of Richarlison, who he had also hauled down for his first booking just before the break.

And there was nothing Schmeichel could do when Sigurdsson received a pass from Kurt Zouma, beat James Maddison with a Cruyff turn and unleashed a magnificent, dipping strike from into the top-left corner – his fourth goal in as many Premier League games clinching the win.

Tottenham 1 Cardiff City 0: Dier seals victory for unconvincing Spurs

    4819054-6247121-image-a-111_1538835680328.jpg

Eric Dier scored the only goal as Tottenham edged 10-man Cardiff in a scrappy Premier League contest at Wembley on Saturday.Dier's goal after eight minutes should have set Spurs on the road to a comfortable victory against a club yet to record a top-flight victory this season.

But that was as good as it got for the hosts, who wasted further goalscoring opportunities and survived periods of sustained Cardiff pressure.

The Welsh club's hopes of snatching a result faded when Joe Ralls was sent off for an appalling challenge on Lucas Moura, with Spurs holding on for the three points.Keen to bounce back from a 4-2 Champions League defeat at home to Barcelona on Wednesday, Spurs made a flying start.

A Davinson Sanchez header from a corner landed at the feet of Joe Bennett, who could not shape himself for a clearance before England midfielder Dier prodded home.

The Bluebirds threatened a response in the 23rd minute, when Josh Murphy demonstrated his pace before lifting the ball over Hugo Lloris, only for Toby Alderweireld to impressively clear off the line under pressure from Junior Hoilett.

Tottenham should have added to Dier's strike in the closing stages of the first half, when Lucas placed a shot just wide of the left-hand post and Son Heung-min – the architect of his team-mate's chance – blazed over from a promising position just inside the Cardiff box.The Cardiff goal came under threat once more soon after the restart, with Neil Etheridge pushing a Harry Kane header into the path of Lucas, whose shot was blocked on the line by Sean Morrison.

The task facing Neil Warnock's side got tougher just short of the hour mark, though, when Ralls hacked down Lucas in full flow, earning a red card from referee Mike Dean.

Lloris had to be alert to keep out a Morrison header that would have earned an unlikely, yet deserved point, and Mauricio Pochettino will want to see improvements after the international break.

Watford 0 Bournemouth 4: Majestic King bags brace in emphatic win

Bournemouth recorded their biggest ever Premier League away victory and stretched 10-man Watford's winless top-flight run to four with a stunning 4-0 success at Vicarage Road.

A second consecutive league triumph for Eddie Howe's side moves them up to fifth in the table, while Watford's season – which started with four straight wins – is in danger of unravelling.

David Brooks – who scored in Monday's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace – got the Cherries on their way early on before Josh King doubled their advantage from the spot after Christian Kabasele had brought him down in the area after 33 minutes.

Kabasele received a second caution and subsequent red for that challenge and the visitors made their numerical superiority count as King and Callum Wilson scored either side of half-time to seal a memorable win.
Despite a sluggish start Bournemouth took the lead after a flowing counter-attack in the 14th minute. Wilson's effort from King's low cross was superbly pawed away by Ben Foster, but only as far as Brooks, who turned into an empty net from 10 yards. The hosts should have restored parity soon after, but an unmarked Craig Cathcart inexplicably headed wide from six yards.

Wilson then missed a glorious headed chance of his own from Brooks' cross before Kabasele's haphazard defending all but ended his side's hopes of getting back into the game. The Belgian received his second yellow card for clumsily hauling King down in the area, the Cherries forward coolly slotting into Foster's bottom-left corner from the resulting spot-kick.

Watford's misery was compounded on the stroke of half-time when King bagged his second, heading past Foster at the back post from Wilson's teasing cross.Wilson then got in on the act two minutes after the restart, looping a volley over Foster from Ryan Fraser's cross for his third goal of the season.

Foster denied King a third late on, but it mattered little as Bournemouth comfortably saw things out to register a punishing win.

Crystal Palace 0 Wolves 1: Doherty extends unbeaten run to six

Matt Doherty's second-half goal secured Wolves a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace and extended their unbeaten Premier League run to six matches.

Nuno Espirito Santo named an unchanged team for the eighth league game in a row and that familiarity shone through, as they appeared at ease even when under pressure and were deserved winners.Although Palace were on top in the first half, they were utterly devoid of craft in attack and Wolves went close twice on the break.

Nuno's men made the most of their superior creativity up front and deservedly went ahead in the 56th minute through Doherty and Palace – who have not scored in their four home league games this season – suffered a second successive loss.Wolves struggled to get out of their penalty area in the opening 30 minutes, but Palace could not break through their visitors despite dominating.

Palace were also caught by two Diogo Jota-inspired counter-attacks, but escaped both times. Raul Jimenez shot just wide of the bottom-left corner on the first occasion, before then being thwarted by Wayne Hennessey in a one-on-one situation.

The hosts eventually tested Rui Patricio just before half-time, the goalkeeper palming Luka Milivojevic's 25-yard free-kick away from his top-right corner.Wolves were able to get forward more after the break and they took the lead when Doherty played a one-two with Jimenez and squeezed an effort inside Hennessey's near post.

Palace piled the pressure on towards the end, with a Max Meyer volley forcing a save from Patricio, before Jeffrey Schlupp saw two close-range efforts crucially blocked.

Ivan Cavaleiro hit the crossbar and got booked for going head-to-head with Patrick van Aanholt after his introduction, but the match's outcome was unchanged as Wolves held on.

:love:Manchester United 3 Newcastle United 2: Sanchez completes stunning turnaround

    4822962-6247571-image-a-235_1538850197203.jpg

A 90th-minute header from Alexis Sanchez secured a stunning comeback from Manchester United as they came from 2-0 down to beat Newcastle United 3-2.
Pressure on Jose Mourinho had intensified after four games without a win in all competitions, although the club had dismissed reports he would be sacked regardless of Saturday's result.

It looked as though the manager's days could be numbered when Newcastle raced into a two-goal lead inside 10 minutes, but second-half goals from Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and substitute Sanchez sealed all three points in remarkable fashion.

Newcastle went in front for the first time in a league game this season only seven minutes in, as Kenedy ran onto Ayoze Perez's throughball, turned away from Ashley Young and curled past David de Gea.

It was 2-0 just three minutes later, Yoshinori Muto spinning beyond Young and firing home from 12 yards out, prompting Mourinho to bring on Mata for Eric Bailly in a drastic reshuffle of his side.

Marcus Rashford then headed a golden chance wide as sections of the United fans began to turn their ire towards the club's board, chanting in support of Mourinho and former captain Gary Neville, who criticised the club's hierarchy on Friday.

It could have been even worse for United before the break, with De Gea clawing away a header from Muto and Young perhaps lucky not to concede a penalty for blocking a free-kick with his arm – although Muto was likewise fortunate for escaping the same offence in his own box.

Mourinho jogged down the tunnel at half-time to considerable applause from the home fans, who should have been celebrating a goal five minutes after the restart, when Nemanja Matic blazed over the bar with the goal gaping after Martin Dubravka denied Paul Pogba.

Mata grabbed a lifeline 21 minutes from time with an excellent free-kick from 20 yards out, which seemed to spark some life back into the home side, and Martial made it 2-2 after combining brilliantly with Pogba before firing into the bottom-left corner.

United's pressure did not relent and Sanchez responded to his own critics with a fine header from Young's deep cross from the right, prompting resounding chants in support of Mourinho from the buoyant home crowd.

Deportivo Alaves 1 Real Madrid 0: Garcia shocks blunt Los Blancos

    4823744-6247757-Alaves_are_flying_high_in_La_Liga_sitting_in_third_place_just_be-a-45_1538852246497.jpg

Real Madrid's dismal run continued as Manu Garcia's last-gasp header claimed a dramatic 1-0 LaLiga win for Deportivo Alaves.

On as a second-half substitute, Garcia capitalised on terrible Madrid marking to nod home from point-blank range in the final minute of stoppage time and punish Madrid's profligacy at the other end.It was nothing more than Alaves deserved on the balance of the game, with Madrid's lacklustre attacking play coming back to haunt them once again.

Julen Lopetegui's side have now gone three LaLiga matches without a goal for the first time since March 2002, and have lost three of their last four fixtures in all competitions.

The defeat compounds a miserable run for Lopetegui, who needed a reaction following a heavy defeat to Sevilla and their surprise 1-0 loss to CSKA Moscow in the Champions League, and the former Spain boss is sure to be feeling the pressure.

Madrid were on top early on with Karim Benzema and Dani Ceballos both forcing Fernando Pacheco into action before Nacho Fernandez headed wide.

Benzema went closer in the ninth minute, Ximo Navarro's desperate goal-line clearance denying Madrid an opener, but that was the last chance of note the visitors would create.Toni Kroos, on his 200th Madrid appearance, came to their rescue after the interval, making a crucial interception after Ibai Gomez latched onto Jony's cross.

Ruben Duarte tried his luck from range as Alaves' pressure continued, with Thibaut Courtois fortunate the rebound from his save did not fall to Gomez.Marco Asensio's introduction injected some urgency, but it was Alaves substitute Garcia who would have the final say.

Jony's looping corner found Ruben Sobrino unmarked at the far post, and he had the presence of mind to head the ball back across goal, with Garcia on hand to secure a famous victory.

Salah 'excellent' but yet to match Aguero - Guardiola

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah must show consistency over a long period to earn comparisons with Sergio Aguero, according to Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

Egypt international Salah scooped a host of individual awards, including the golden boot, last season after netting 44 goals in all competitions for the Reds.

Aguero however is the second highest scoring overseas player in Premier League history and last month entered the top 10 in the all-time standings after goals against Cardiff City and Brighton and Hove Albion - surpassing Teddy Sheringham.

The Argentina forward has netted at least 28 times in six of his seven full seasons in England and though Guardiola is expecting more from Salah he feels comparisons between the pair are premature."He (Salah) is younger and it was his first year back in England since his time at Chelsea, so we will see in the future," said Guardiola.

"But a guy who has the quality to score 50 goals in a season always has that quality. But football is all about ups and downs."Salah remains an excellent player and will score goals in the future. When you are in there scenting goals sometimes this happens.

"Sergio has scored a lot of goals but there were periods when he didn't score goals."How many years has Sergio scored all those goals, eight or nine years? For Salah it was the first one so we will see in seven or eight years."

Salah is yet to recapture his form from his maiden campaign at Anfield, scoring just three times in 10 appearances this season and was even taken off during the 1-1 draw with Chelsea last weekend.

The ex-Roma winger scored in two of Liverpool's three wins over Man City last term and they will hope to make it five home league wins in a row over Guardiola's men when the two sides meet on Sunday.

Guardiola has not been surprised by Liverpool's impressive start to the season - they have won six and drawn one of their seven league games just like City - but has refused to name them as the only challengers for the Premier League title.

"Liverpool are a strong team but so are Chelsea, and Arsenal, Manchester United. Tottenham as well," the Spaniard added."But for us, for Manchester City, we want to defend our title, and they are contenders. Liverpool have started so well, they have the same points us, but we were expecting that all along.

"Liverpool were an excellent team last season and since then they have bought some more incredible players to fight against us."

Text from Manchester United board reassured Mourinho over sacking reports

Jose Mourinho said he received a text from the Manchester United board telling him to pay no attention to reports he was to be sacked regardless of the result in Saturday's clash with Newcastle United. The Daily Mirror published a story on Friday claiming Mourinho was to be dismissed as United manager this weekend, a situation that sparked much debate.

Former United captain Gary Neville – now a television pundit – slammed the club for allegedly leaking the story to a journalist, suggesting something similar happened when Louis van Gaal lost his job in 2016.

Mourinho's side went on to win 3-2 at Old Trafford despite trailing 2-0 within 10 minutes, but the Portuguese insists the speculation surrounding his future had no impact because United's hierarchy had already provided reassurances. He told talkSPORT: "The ones that read the papers, that are connected with social media, they thought maybe I had gone [been sacked].

"If I hadn't had an SMS from my board not to read [into the speculation], I would have been convinced too."

Unsurprisingly, Mourinho was prickly with reporters in his post-match news conference, particularly when asked about what he had said to his players at half-time to inspire the turnaround."I think you will know what I told," Mourinho said. "If you want to know, you will know.

"You know everything; what is true, what is not true. I'm pretty sure you will make some calls and you will know what I told at half-time."Mourinho also accused the media of doubting the professionalism of United's players.

"I think there is too much talk, you put in doubt the honesty and professionalism of the players," he added.

Real Madrid would be crazy to sack Lopetegui – Ramos

Sergio Ramos thinks it would be "crazy" for Real Madrid to sack Julen Lopetegui despite Los Blancos seeing their winless run stretch to four games with Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Deportivo Alaves.Madrid are enduring a dismal run, which began with a resounding 3-0 loss at Sevilla on September 26.

They followed that up with a 0-0 draw at home to bitter rivals Atletico Madrid, before back-to-back 1-0 losses to CSKA Moscow and Alaves in the Champions League and LaLiga, respectively, heaped pressure on the coach.

Lopetegui has only been in the job since July after he replaced Zinedine Zidane, but following something of a honeymoon period, he really has hit work cut out.The manager himself said he isn't concerned quite yet as Lopetegui isn't worrying about a potential dismissal.

Although three teams could all go above them on Sunday, Madrid remain joint top for the time being and Ramos thinks it would be a baffling decision to dismiss Lopetegui already.

"Other people take decisions like that, but it's never good when there is a change in coach. It would be crazy," Ramos said to reporters in Vitoria on Saturday. "We have to move on, because the season is very long and there's a very long way to go. Whoever says Real Madrid are dead is always proved wrong in the long term.

"We [the players] are the first people that need to do more to improve and we're trying to do that. It's not fair to point the blame at anyone, we're all conscious of the reality."Results are what people talk about and especially when you lose, but we are still committed, we are still ambitious and we still want to win, it's in our DNA. We're on the right path despite the bad results."

Madrid are next in action at home to Levante after the international break.
