Inter 1 Lazio 1 (aet, 3-4 on penalties): Lucas wins shoot-out after dramatic draw

    9250728-6655133-image-a-57_1548975633393.jpg

Lazio reached the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia thanks to a penalty shoot-out win over Inter after a 1-1 draw at San Siro on Thursday.

Ciro Immobile's scuffed and deflected strike eluded the otherwise-brilliant Samir Handanovic and looked set to secure Lazio's progress until Mauro Icardi levelled with a penalty with seconds remaining.Lucas Leiva struck what proved to be the winning spot-kick after former Roma man Radja Nainggolan saw his effort saved, ensuring another quarter-final triumph for Lazio and placing more pressure on Inter boss Luciano Spalletti.

Handanovic twice denied Luis Alberto before he produced a stunning reaction stop to deny Senad Lulic, although the offside flag would have disallowed any goal.Inter then wasted the best chance of the first hour, as Antonio Candreva, against his former club, somehow side-footed high and wide with the goal gaping after Thomas Strakosha parried Joao Mario's shot into his path.

Felipe Caicedo had the chance to score the winner off the bench with barely two minutes left of normal time, but Handanovic again made a superb save to keep out the striker's uncertain finish, before tipping another Immobile shot wide.In injury time, Strakosha blocked a Matteo Politano shot and the loose ball fell to Lautaro Martinez, who slipped and scuffed the shot over the bar.

Mauro Icardi saw a penalty shout waved away after a push by Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as Inter began to look likeliest to strike in extra time, but it was Immobile who at last broke the deadlock and sent Lazio through, the striker combining with Caicedo and sending a deflected shot just beyond the reach of Handanovic.

Kwadwo Asamoah had a late red card reduced to a yellow after a VAR review, but the bigger drama was yet to come, with Milinkovic-Savic ruled to have fouled Danilo D'Ambrosio by the video assistant in the last minute of stoppage time, allowing Icardi to bury an equaliser with the final kick after Stefan Radu had been sent off for his appeals.

Martinez and Riza Durmisi had penalties saved, but when Strakosha stood tall and parried Nainggolan's effort over the bar, Lucas swept home to send his side into the next round.

Girona 1 Real Madrid 3 (3-7 agg): Benzema brace helps secure semi-final spot

    9247086-6654979-image-a-22_1548971025330.jpg

Karim Benzema scored a superb double as Real Madrid won 3-1 at Girona to complete a 7-3 aggregate success and cruise into the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey.

A Sergio Ramos brace established a comfortable cushion for Madrid in the first leg and Benzema capitalised with two first-half strikes at Estadi Montilivi in Thursday's return. The former France international has now hit five goals in his last three appearances as he continues to thrive under the leadership of Madrid coach Santiago Solari.

Pedro Porro's strike proved only a consolation as Marcos Llorente wrapped up the scoring - meaning Madrid join Real Betis, Valencia and holders Barcelona in the draw for the last four of the competition.
Girona needed a fast start and they hit the woodwork in the second minute, Alex Granell's inswinging free-kick from wide on the right wing crashing back off the crossbar. But Madrid took the lead in the 27th minute, Benzema swapping passes with Dani Carvajal to create space before thrashing a swerving drive past goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz.

And Benzema put the tie beyond Girona before half-time, curling a wonderful strike beyond Iraizoz and in off the far post after linking up with Vinicius Junior.Madrid should have added a third but when Iraizoz made a good save from substitute Marco Asensio, Lucas Vazquez somehow managed to hit the post with the goal gaping.

And while Porro beat Keylor Navas in the 71st minute to briefly spark hope for Girona, they had left themselves far too much to do and Llorente's fine run and 20-yard drive settled matters.

Leicester announce Tielemans loan from Monaco

Leicester City have announced the signing of Belgium international Youri Tielemans on loan for the remainder of the 2018-19 season, with Adrien Silva heading the other way to the Ligue 1 side for the rest of the current campaign.

"I’m really excited to get going," Tielemans told LCFC TV. "The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world and when I was young, I always watched Premier League games. I’m really happy to be here and I’m excited to get started.“It’s a big family. Everybody is really kind and really good with me. I think it will be really good here.”

The 21-year-old will be looking to get his career back on track, having looked so promising when he made the move to the principality club from Anderlecht in the summer of 2017.

Breaking into Anderlecht's first team at age 16, he enjoyed a quick rise as one of Europe's finest prospects, scoring six goals in both 2014-15 and 2015-16, before capping his time in the Belgian top flight with 13 strikes in the 2016-17 league season.A move to Monaco followed, fresh off the club capturing the Ligue 1 title, but Tielemans was unable to reach the same heights in his first year at the club.He did not find the back of the net last season in the French top tier in 27 appearances with his only goal coming in the Champions League.

However, he has shown signs of tapping into that potential which made him a sought-after talent just a few years ago, as he has notched five goals and an assist this season for Monaco despite the club's woes which see them second from the bottom in Ligue 1 and three points away from safety.

The youngster also played his way into the Belgium national team, making four appearances and two starts at the 2018 World Cup in a campaign that saw the Red Devils finish third. He also started all four of Belgium's Nations League matches this past autumn.

Tielemans will now look to continue that growth with a Leicester club that sit in 11th place but just three points off seventh after snatching a point at Anfield against league-leading Liverpool on Wednesday.Going the other way is Silva, who was at the centre of a dispute in the summer of 2017 over his initial transfer from Portuguese club Sporting to Leicester.

The documents relating to Silva's transfer to the Premier League side arrived moments after the window closed and Silva was unable to be registered by the club until the January 2018 window.

After 12 Premier League appearances last season, tallying an assist, Silva has made just a pair of league appearances this season under Claude Puel.

Man Utd keeper Pereira secures loan move

Manchester United goalkeeper Joel Pereira has joined Belgian club KV Kortrijk on loan until the end of the season.

The 22-year-old made nine league appearances during a loan spell at Portuguese side Vitoria Setubal during the fist half of the season, and would have been United's fourth-choice keeper behind David de Gea, Sergio Romero and Lee Grant had he stayed at Old Trafford.

Pereira, who was born in Switzerland but has played for Portugal at Under-21 level, has previously had temporary spells at Rochdale and Belenenses of the Portuguese top flight as well after graduating from the Reds' youth team.

He was much admired by former Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho, who had commented Pereira could become "the Portuguese goalkeeper of the next generation".

The stopper joins midfielder Matty Willock in making a loan move away from Old Trafford on deadline day.Willock joined Crawley Town for the remainder of the season earlier today, having also spent the first half of the campaign away from the club.

During a temporary stint with St Mirren the 22-year-old made 13 appearances north of the border, but now links up with Crawley who sit 16th in League 2.However, Timothy Fosu-Mensah has apparently turned down a number of loan offers after only playing 34 minutes of football since Claudio Ranieri replaced Slavisi Jokanovic at Fulham.

Huddersfield Town are reported to be one of the clubs who contacted Fosu-Mensah over a potential switch, but the defender is now expected to stay at Craven Cottage.Marouane Fellaini also is expected to secure a move out of Manchester though, having been spotted at an airport in Brussels.

United have agreed a £10 million deal with Chinese Super League club Shandong Luneng, and the Belgium international is set to sign a three-year deal after falling out of favour under caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But the Reds did tie down Anthony Martial to a five-year contract on Wednesday after the Frenchman has put in a number of impressive performances in recent weeks.

Spain goalkeeper De Gea is apparently also close to committing his future to United and could sign a long-term deal soon.

Barcelona announce €12m deal for Atletico Mineiro's Emerson

Barcelona have signed full-back Emerson in a €12 million (£10m/$14m) transfer from Atletico Mineiro, with the defender set to join the La Liga champions in the summer.

The 20-year-old Emerson will join Barca on a five-year contract that runs through the 2023-24 season when he officially links up with the club on July 1.However, prior to his move to Barca, he will head to La Liga for the remainder of the campaign on a half-season loan to Real Betis, the Seville club have announced.

Emerson, who turned 20 on January 14, has played one season at Mineiro scoring a goal and adding an assist for the club in 23 appearances, who finished sixth in the top-flight in 2018.Previously, he had played for Brazilian side Ponte Preda, making just three appearances in the league for the club.

The right-back has also featured for Brazil at the youth levels and is currently with his nation's side at the South American U-20 championships, where he has started four of their five games.

In the Barca's statement over the transfer, Emerson was compared to former club star and felow Brazilian Dani Alves.

The move continues a busy January window for the Catalan club, which has seen multiple arrivals and departures. The big transfer saw the Liga champions beat the likes of Manchester City and Paris-Saint Germain to the signing Ajax's Frenkie de Jong in a €75m move, which, like Emerson, will see the midfielder join the club in the summer rather than in the winter window.

However, Barcelona did land Kevin-Prince Boateng from Sassuolo to bolster the club's depth along the forward line along with Valencia's Jeison Murillo to do the same along the defence. Both moves are loans but the club have the option to make the deals permanent.

In addition, Ernesto Valverde's side have loaned Denis Suarez to Arsenal and said goodbye to depth striker Munir El Haddadi earlier in the month in a €1m transfer to Sevilla as the player was set to leave the club for free in the summer.

Almiron makes Newcastle move as part of club-record £20m deal

Miguel Almiron has completed his club-record £20 million ($27m) move to Newcastle, with the 24-year-old forward penning a five-and-a-half-year contract.
The Paraguay international, whose terms are due to run until the summer of 2024, arrives at St James’ Park from Major League Soccer side Atlanta United. He helped them to MLS Cup glory in 2018, netting 13 goals and providing as many assists along the way.

Newcastle are hoping to benefit from a similar contribution after making him the most expensive signing in the club’s history – with a big-money deal topping the £15m ($20m) paid for Michael Owen back in 2005.Almiron is delighted to have earned such a show of faith, telling NUFC TV: "I’m very happy and eager to start and to meet my new team mates.

"The league is very competitive, this is a historic club, and Rafa Benitez himself were the main reasons why I am here now."I think it is a great responsibility, something beautiful for me, and I will try to offer the best I can to repay the trust the club put in me."

Magpies manager Benitez added on a welcome addition to his squad: "We were following Miguel Almiron for a while, and we saw a player with some pace in attack, who can play behind the striker. We have someone who can score goals and give assists."We know that MLS is a different challenge to the Premier League but he has the potential to do what we are expecting, and what we need.

"From talking to the lad, you can tell that he is really focussed and wants to do well. He wants to be successful and he wants to help the team, to score goals and give assists if it is possible.

"His impact in MLS has been really good - he's been one of the best players this year - and hopefully he can give us more competition and more quality in the final third.

"I am pleased that the hard work behind the scenes has ended positively and I thank everyone for their efforts."Almiron, who has been capped on 13 occasions by his country, will take the No. 24 shirt at Newcastle.

Manchester United winger Anthony Martial has signed a new five-year contract with the club on deadline day, after months of negotiations and transfer speculation. The Frenchman rejected an extension offer back in October last year, amid widespread reports he was unhappy with his situation at the club under former boss Jose Mourinho.

Suarez seals Arsenal loan switch after extending Barcelona deal

    9225442-6652917-image-a-53_1548938924369.jpg

Denis Suarez has completed his loan move to Arsenal after extending his contract at Barcelona through to 2021.

Despite penning fresh terms at Camp Nou, the deal which has taken the 25-year-old to Emirates Stadium includes the option for Gunners to push through a permanent transfer in the summer.Goal revealed back on January 10 that Suarez had emerged as a top target for Unai Emery.

It appeared at one stage as though his efforts to put a reunion in place would come to nothing, with talks breaking down.Goal, however, confirmed on Tuesday that a breakthrough had been reached and a switch was back on.

Barca then inadvertently announced the deal on their official website, before hastily deleting the article in question.Everything is now official, with Suarez linking up with the Gunners on an initial agreement through to the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

Emery told Arsenal's website on bringing in a familiar face: “We are very happy that Denis Suarez is joining us."He is a player we know well and I have worked with him at Sevilla. He brings us quality and options in many different attacking positions, so he’ll be able to help the team.”

Suarez has already said his goodbyes to those at Camp Nou, with an emotional message posted on social media prior to the announcement of his departure. He said: “You’re a group of amazing people! Thank you for everything, see you soon. Good luck and Força Barça.”

Suarez has been brought in by Arsenal to compete for playing time in attacking midfielder berths with Alex Iwobi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who is currently sidelined with a foot injury.
He arrives in north London having made a total of 71 appearances for Barca since re-joining the club in 2016, but having been used sparingly this term.Suarez has just two La Liga outings to his name this season, to go along with six appearances combined in the Champions League and Copa del Rey.

In his time with the Blaugrana, Suarez scored eight goals and won five trophies: one La Liga, two Copas del Rey and two Spanish Super Cups.

Barcelona 2 Valencia 2: Messi leads fightback in LaLiga thriller

    9314798-0-image-a-67_1549135475700.jpg

Lionel Messi scored twice as champions Barcelona fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Valencia in LaLiga on Saturday.

The Blaugrana captain was in inspired form after it looked as though Ernesto Valverde's call to shuffle his pack would see his side come away empty-handed as they deservedly trailed to efforts from Kevin Gameiro and Daniel Parejo. The league leaders rallied and Messi scored either side of half-time to clinch a point in a match packed with incident.

Atletico Madrid can now close to within three points of top spot if they beat Real Betis on Sunday, but Barca at least avoided embarrassment ahead of facing Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday.

Barcelona failed to heed early warnings as Marc-Andre ter Stegen made an instinctive stop from Parejo and watched Denis Cheryshev strike the post, before Rodrigo Moreno fed Gameiro to smash in the opener. It was two when Sergi Roberto shoved Daniel Wass to the ground in the area and Parejo scored from the spot - shortly after an outstanding Neto save at the other end - but a second penalty award breathed new life into Barca.

Referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco blew for a foul on Nelson Semedo moments before Messi arrowed the loose ball into the top corner, but the official's blushes were spared as the same man netted from 12 yards.

Roberto cracked the upright and Messi wastefully volleyed over as Valencia's defensive effort became increasingly desperate, although Rodrigo twice went close to a clinching third following the restart.Predictably, it was Messi who made the Valencia forward pay, curling a low effort around two defenders from 25 yards.

Barca's talisman subsequently required treatment for an apparent thigh ailment, but he returned to see out the 90 minutes as his side fell short of completing the turnaround and claiming all three points.

Cardiff City 2 Bournemouth 0: Reid grabs brace as club salutes Sala

Bobby Reid scored a brace on his 26th birthday to help Cardiff City end their four-game winless Premier League streak with a 2-0 victory over Bournemouth as the club paid tribute to missing striker Emiliano Sala.It was Cardiff's first win of 2019 and one they thoroughly deserved after successfully shackling a Bournemouth side who put four past Chelsea in their previous outing.

Reid converted a fifth-minute penalty and was a constant menace to Bournemouth's defenders, who failed to contain him when he doubled the Bluebirds' lead just seconds into the second half.

The result was not enough to lift Cardiff out of the relegation zone - they are two points behind 17th-placed Burnley - but on an emotional night they pulled together and delivered a result and a performance that the whole club sorely needed. Sala became Cardiff's record signing last month when he moved from Nantes, but while crossing the English Channel his plane subsequently disappeared.

Steve Cook handled a high ball in the penalty area to divert it away from Oumar Niasse after just five minutes and Reid sent the ensuing spot-kick straight down the middle to beat Artur Boruc.Bournemouth grew into the game with Josh King and Andrew Surman pulling the strings and Ryan Fraser curled a shot around the post from 18 yards with Cardiff's defenders backing away from him.

Cardiff goalkeeper Neil Etheridge made a superb save to turn Surman's dipping 20-yard shot onto the crossbar and at the other end Adam Smith defended Josh Murphy's cross superbly, sweeping the ball away from Callum Paterson when the winger would surely have scored at close range. The second half was just 13 seconds old when Aron Gunnarsson's long ball forward split the Bournemouth defence and Reid took a touch to guide it past Boruc before tucking it into the empty net.

Bournemouth pressed throughout the second half without giving Etheridge any real scares and Eddie Howe's men certainly missed the creativity of David Brooks as they suffered a second defeat in four games.

Everton 1 Wolves 3: Nuno's men impress as Silva's woes worsen

Wolves piled further pressure on under-fire Everton boss Marco Silva with an entertaining 3-1 win at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The Toffees' patchy results this season have seen the Portuguese's position come under intense scrutiny and he will not be sitting any more comfortably after Wolves picked up a third straight Premier League victory to cement their place just outside the top six.Ruben Neves' early penalty had Nuno Espirito Santo's side ahead but Everton were level midway through the first half thanks to Andre Gomes' thumping first goal for the club.

However, slack marking from a free-kick allowed Raul Jimenez to head home on the stroke of half-time and Leander Dendoncker smashed in a volley midway through the second period to secure Wolves' first win at Goodison in 40 years.
Everton had taken the lead inside three minutes of their win at Huddersfield Town on Tuesday but it was their turn to fall behind early on here as Leighton Baines felled Matt Doherty and Neves calmly converted the spot-kick.

The hosts almost gifted Wolves a second in the 20th minute when Tom Davies lost the ball and Jimenez fed Dendoncker, who was denied by Jordan Pickford at close quarters.Rui Patricio surged out to thwart Theo Walcott as Everton sought a response, which duly arrived in the 27th minute thanks to Gomes' rasping drive into the roof of the net from 18 yards.

But Wolves restored their advantage as Jimenez rose unchallenged to head Joao Moutinho's delivery into the bottom-left corner. And the visitors earned some breathing space as the rebound from Diogo Jota's blocked attempt fell straight to Dendoncker to lash home from eight yards - capping an impressive day for Wolves and a torrid one for Silva and Everton.
