Tottenham 0 West Ham 1: Antonio strikes as Spurs slip in top-four race

    12788660-6966457-image-a-85_1556369930259.jpg

Tottenham slipped up in the race for Champions League qualification as they succumbed to a 1-0 Premier League defeat to West Ham.

Mauricio Pochettino's side relied on Christian Eriksen's 88th-minute stunner to secure the points against Brighton and Hove Albion on Tuesday, and a sluggish display this time around was punished when Michail Antonio hammered home in the 67th minute - marking the first time Tottenham have conceded at their new home.

The hosts - who have a Champions League semi-final first-leg tie with Ajax next up on Tuesday - had their chances with Son Heung-min particularly wasteful and Vincent Janssen denied on the line late on, while Lukasz Fabianski was typically impressive in West Ham's goal.

And their lacklustre showing was made worse as Antonio slammed in from close range to inflict a first defeat on Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and keep the top-four race wide open.
Son should have done better when played through by Dele Alli in the 11th minute but the South Korea forward failed to generate enough power to beat Fabianski.

Felipe Anderson demonstrated similar profligacy soon after, drilling straight at Hugo Lloris after driving clear down the left, while a crisp Lucas Moura strike flashed wide at the other end.

Reckless play from Issa Diop might have proved costly for West Ham if not for Fabianski's fine save from Eriksen's snapshot - before Felipe Anderson's deflected strike almost caught Lloris flat footed.

Marko Arnautovic was the next to test Lloris as West Ham grew in confidence after the restart, though Tottenham wanted a penalty when Son went down under pressure from Arthur Masuaku after failing to get a shot off.West Ham's resilience was rewarded soon after, Antonio expertly controlling Arnautovic's cross before sending a rasping strike past Lloris.

But with Antonio and Diop both squandering chances to make sure of the win, Fabian Balbuena came to West Ham's rescue with a goal-line clearance to deny substitute Janssen an equaliser.

Borussia Dortmund 2 Schalke 4: BVB's Revierderby implosion hands Bayern huge title advantage

    12795838-0-image-a-50_1556386559862.jpg

Nine-man Borussia Dortmund collapsed to a nightmare 4-2 Revierderby defeat against bitter rivals Schalke, leaving Bayern Munich as strong favourites to win a seventh consecutive Bundesliga title.

Lucien Favre's side looked set to keep their bid for glory on track when Jadon Sancho brilliantly created Mario Gotze's early goal but Daniel Caligiuri converted an 18th-minute penalty.

Salif Sane gave Schalke the lead before the half hour and Caligiuri scored a magnificent free-kick in between red cards for Marco Reus and Marius Wolf as Dortmund imploded at a remarkable rate.

Axel Witsel pulled one back five minutes from time but Breel Embolo lashed another fine finish into the bottom corner, sparking more delirious celebrations from the travelling Schalke contingent.Bayern will go four points clear at the summit with three games to play if they beat struggling Nurnberg on Sunday.

Sancho's wonderful chip caught out the Schalke backline and Gotze darted into the box to head a 14th-minute opener.

Dortmund's lead was short-lived, however, after Julian Weigl was harshly penalised for handball in the penalty area after a VAR review.Veteran Schalke coach Huub Stevens looked perplexed on the touchline but celebrated heartily when Caligiuri coolly sent Roman Burki the wrong way. Schalke led a Bundesliga match for the first time since March 31 in the 28th minute when Sane powered home Caligiuri's right-wing corner.

A scrappy start to the second half suited Schalke, and Dortmund boss Favre ended Thomas Delaney's ragged showing in midfield and sent on striker Paco Alcacer – although his team's afternoon would soon disintegrate.Reus received his marching orders for hacking down Suat Serdar, when a yellow card seemed sufficient, and Caligiuri sent a stunning 25-yard effort whistling into the top corner.

Even considering Dortmund's evidently low opinion of referee Felix Zwayer, Wolf will not reflect upon his 65th-minute recreation of Reus' challenge on Serdar as a particularly bright moment.

An improbably unmarked Witsel reduced the arrears with a back-post volley before Embolo completed a chastening outing for Dortmund, who must now hope for an unlikely Nurnberg victory – the only result that can maintain Schalke's slim mathematical fears of automatic relegation to 2. Bundesliga.

Watford 1 Wolves 2: Nuno's men strengthen grip on seventh place

Wolves exacted revenge for their FA Cup semi-final defeat to Watford earlier this month as Diogo Jota's goal secured a 2-1 Premier League win at Vicarage Road.

Javi Gracia's side came from two goals down at Wembley on April 7 to book a final against Manchester City but slipped to a defeat on Saturday that leaves them four points behind Nuno Espirito Santo's seventh-place side.

Raul Jimenez continued his impressive season, heading home shortly before the interval to put the visitors ahead, but a mistake from Ryan Bennett gave Andre Gray the opportunity to equalise shortly after the restart.

The game looked to be petering out for an uninspiring draw but Jota – who scored in Wednesday's superb 3-1 win over Arsenal – secured all three points 13 minutes from time.
Both sides looked sluggish in the early stages and it was not until the 33rd minute that the first chance was carved out. Jimenez thought he had put Wolves ahead but Etienne Capoue superbly hooked his bundled effort off the line.

Will Hughes then squandered a glorious opportunity to score, inexplicably heading over from just five yards out.His misery was compounded four minutes before the interval when Jimenez met Jota's cross just six yards out to head home his 13th Premier League goal of the campaign.

Watford pulled level four minutes after the restart and were given a helping hand by Bennett. The Wolves defender's careless pass across the backline was intercepted by Deulofeu and despite Rui Patricio getting down quickly to deny the Spaniard, Gray was on hand to lash home the loose ball from 15 yards.

Jota was to have the final word, however, taking advantage of Ben Foster's rash decision to come for Ruben Neves' cross and steer home to secure a second consecutive Premier League win for Nuno's side.

Southampton 3 Bournemouth 3: Saints secure Premier League status with draw

Southampton secured their Premier League status for another season despite twice letting slip a lead in a 3-3 draw with Bournemouth at St Mary's Stadium.Ralph Hasenhuttl's side scored first through the in-form Shane Long but trailed 2-1 at the interval after goals from Dan Gosling and Callum Wilson.

A see-saw contest on the south coast swung back in the Saints' favour in the second half, James Ward-Prowse levelling at 2-2 before substitute Matt Targett headed in Yan Valery's cross.

However, Wilson's second denied Southampton a fourth win in their last five home games, albeit the point – coupled with Cardiff City's 1-0 loss at Fulham – means they are safe with two fixtures remaining.
Long had scored after just seven seconds in the 1-1 draw against Watford in midweek but had to wait a little longer to find the net on Saturday, his 12th-minute strike from Nathan Redmond’s square pass finding its way in via a deflection off defender Nathan Ake.A tactical switch from Eddie Howe turned the tide, though Gosling had already equalised by the time Bournemouth switched to a back four.

Still, the change saw them control the rest of the first half, adding a second goal when Wilson converted a rebound from David Brooks' long-range effort.Hasenhuttl saw an alteration of his own pay off too, Targett coming on to score his first league goal for the club to add to Ward-Prowse’s left-footed drive.

And, while Wilson popped up again to draw Bournemouth level in the closing minutes by tapping home Ryan Fraser’s low cross, Southampton were still able to celebrate at the final whistle.

Atletico Madrid 1 Real Valladolid 0: Joaquin own goal keeps Barcelona waiting

Atletico Madrid kept their LaLiga title challenge alive for a little while longer with a 1-0 victory over Real Valladolid at the Wanda Metropolitano.Defeat on Saturday would have made Barcelona champions before they kicked a ball this weekend, but a second-half own goal from Joaquin Fernandez gave Atletico a win that means the leaders must beat Levante later in order to guarantee the title.

The goal was an unfortunate moment in an otherwise strong performance from the visitors, who could find themselves back in the relegation zone if other results now go against them.

There were more bookings (four) than shots on target (three) in a poor first half, with Jan Oblak making one good save to deny Sergi Guardiola from 20 yards out.Antoine Griezmann could not quite steer a shot into the right-hand corner after good play from Alvaro Morata, but Atleti were struggling to control the pace of the game without Rodrigo in central midfield, and he was introduced at half-time for the ineffective Thomas Partey.Atleti's increasing pressure was still yielding few chances until 65 minutes in, when Saul Niguez's good run and cross from the left saw Joaquin head the ball into his own net.

Oblak superbly kept out a fierce Oscar Plano strike as Valladolid pushed for a leveller, and there was a moment of controversy two minutes before the end of normal time when referee Mario Melero Lopez opted not to award the visitors a penalty for handball despite checking the VAR monitor.

Miguel de la Fuente was denied by another strong Oblak save in injury time, as Atletico just about managed to keep the pressure on the leaders.

Barcelona 1 Levante 0: Messi goal secures LaLiga title as Barca eye treble

    12803434-6967533-image-a-2_1556408474003.jpg

Barcelona wrapped up their 26th LaLiga title as Lionel Messi came off the bench to score the winner in a 1-0 victoryover Levante on Saturday that could be the catalyst for treble success.

The result at Camp Nou means Ernesto Valverde's men sit nine points ahead of nearest rivals Atletico Madrid, against whom they boast a superior head-to-head record, with three games to go.And Barca still have the chance to lift two more trophies, with a Champions League semi-final against Liverpool and a Copa del Rey final with Valencia to come.

Valverde's decision to again leave Messi on the bench, perhaps with an eye on Wednesday's first-leg visit of Liverpool, will have provided some initial comfort to the visitors.

In the reverse fixture, the star forward was involved in all of Barca's goals – scoring three and assisting two – as the Catalans ran out 5-0 winners. But he was introduced at the break and made the difference, showing profligate team-mates Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez the way.

Levante might have hoped for an easier outing in Messi's first-half absence, but goalkeeper Aitor Fernandez – who did not play in that match – was pressed into notable action twice inside the opening five minutes to repel efforts from Suarez and Coutinho. The same pair were denied again, Suarez at the near post and Coutinho with a gilt-edged headed chance, before the Brazilian struck the crossbar with a free-kick.

Messi came on for the wasteful Coutinho at the interval and finally made the breakthrough just past the hour mark, with Levante failing to clear their lines and the Argentina striker supplying a two-touch finish from the edge of the six-yard box.

Levante were stung into action and Jose Luis Morales should have levelled matters soon after, but he skied over the bar with the under-worked Marc-Andre ter Stegen left exposed.

Considering their complete lack of attacking threat for more than an hour, Levante did well to make the closing stages interesting and Enis Bardhi struck the post in a late scramble, but Barca ultimately sealed the three points they needed to celebrate an eighth LaLiga title in 11 seasons.

Inter 1 Juventus 1: Ronaldo hits 600th club goal

    12798912-0-image-a-161_1556395648643.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 600th career club goal to earn Serie A champions Juventus a 1-1 draw in their Derby d'Italia clash with Inter at San Siro on Saturday. The Portuguese superstar hit the milestone in the 62nd minute, rescuing his side after they fell behind to Radja Nainggolan's stunning early strike.

Wojciech Szczesny could perhaps have done more to keep out Nainggolan's first-half effort, which put Inter on course for a win that would have boosted their top-three hopes.

But Ronaldo struck to ensure Juve, who celebrated an eighth successive Scudetto last week with a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina, dodged just a third league defeat of the campaign.
Juve were rattled by Inter's fast start to the match, falling behind inside seven minutes when Nainggolan thumped a scooped pass from Matteo Politano into the back of the net from 25 yards.Szczesny failed to keep out the strike despite getting an arm to it, but he responded well by denying Mauro Icardi and Stefan de Vrij in the space of 20 seconds, the latter wasting a free header from six yards out.

Juve, whose only on target shot in the first half came from a Leonardo Bonucci drive in the opening minute, would have been further behind at the break had Blaise Matuidi not made a vital block to prevent Icardi firing home. The visitors hit back just after the hour mark as Ronaldo picked out the bottom-right corner with a crisp drive after being teed up by a Miralem Pjanic backheel.

Ivan Perisic and substitute Joao Mario had shots saved in the final 10 minutes but neither team - Pjanic was kept out for Juve beforehand - found a way through in an end-to-end conclusion to the match.

Rennes 2 Paris Saint-Germain 2 (aet, 6-5 on penalties): Mbappe sees red as Coupe de France dominance ends

    12802352-6967679-image-a-191_1556405845610.jpg

Rennes came from two goals down to beat Paris Saint-Germain on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the Coupe de France final.Kylian Mbappe was sent off in extra time before Christopher Nkunku missed the crucial effort from the spot to deny PSG a fifth triumph in a row in the competition, putting further pressure on head coach Thomas Tuchel.

The Ligue 1 champions had led 2-0 after just 21 minutes thanks to stunning goals from Dani Alves and Neymar, making his first start since returning from the foot injury suffered in January.

A Presnel Kimpembe own goal and a header from Mexer dragged Rennes back into the contest, though, and it was Julien Stephan's men who held their nerve in the shoot-out to win the trophy for the first time since 1971.Alves took a dreadful free-kick just three minutes before he broke the deadlock in sensational fashion, meeting Neymar's deep corner with an unstoppable volley from the edge of the area.

Eight minutes later, Alves started a quick counter-attack that saw Angel Di Maria play a fine throughball to Neymar, who chipped goalkeeper Tomas Koubek in impudent fashion.

M'Baye Niang hit the post as Rennes threatened a comeback, though, and when Kimpembe turned Hamari Traore's cross into his own net, the Ligue 1 champions suddenly looked shaky.Koubek made a fine save to keep out another fierce Alves strike, but just as PSG began to take control of proceedings again, Mexer escaped Di Maria at a corner to head home Rennes' equaliser.

Into extra time, Neymar sent Mbappe through but his effort went behind the waiting Edinson Cavani and struck the base of the right-hand post before rebounding to safety.Mbappe's frustrating outing reached a nadir 118 minutes in, as he saw red for a poor high challenge on Damien Da Silva at the end of a period of persistent fouls on both sides.

All 11 of the first penalties were converted, before Nkunku sent his effort high over the crossbar to spark wild Rennes celebrations.

Barcelona should enjoy 'every minute' of 'best player in the world' Messi, says Suarez

Luis Suarez says that his Barcelona team-mates have to enjoy “every minute” that Lionel Messi plays because he is “the best player in the world” after the Argentine secured the La Liga title for the club.

The Argentine came off the bench to score the winner in the Blaugrana’s 1-0 victory over Levante on Saturday, handing them the Spanish domestic title in dominant fashion once again.

The 31-year-old shows no signs of slowing down despite his age and has enjoyed arguably one of his finest seasons as a player, inspiring Barca to success both home and abroad, with the Catalan club still firmly in the mix for Champions League success too.

Speaking to Movistar Partidazo after the game at Camp Nou that confirmed Ernesto Valverde’s side as champions, team-mate Suarez heaped the praise on Messi, stating that his fellow players should both relish and take pride in his skills.

“We have to be realistic that he is the best player in the world,” the Uruguay international stated. “We have to enjoy him every minute he plays, we have to be proud of how great he is.

Touching on the potential of a treble, the former Liverpool favourite was quick to not get carried away, stressing that the team remain focused on the immediate games in hand.Suarez will be reunited with his former club when the Reds visit Camp Nou on Wednesday before he faces a trip back to Anfield less than a week later in the Champions League semi-finals.

“We do not [speak of it],” Suarez said of the treble. “We are aware that on Wednesday we will play one of the biggest games we have all season. We have to [perform in] two big games if we want to achieve our goal."The forward also paid tribute to defeated opponents Levante, who played their part in a close-fought game.

Paco Lopez’s side are still trying to stave off relegation near the other end of the table, where they currently sit three points above the drop, and Suarez stated that the visitors showed their mettle.“This is just another match, another demonstration of how difficult it is to win La Liga,” he added.

"Today, a rival that is playing to avoid relegation has [given] us a game like that. That is a sign of the merit of winning the title."
