Mbappe handed three-match ban for reckless red card in Coupe de France final

Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe has been handed a three-match ban after collecting a reckless red card in the Coupe de France final. The 20-year-old forward was dismissed in extra-time of a highly-charged clash with Rennes.

A dangerous challenge on Damien Da Silva saw Mbappe given his marching orders after he caught his opponent on the knee with his studs showing and was immediately ushered from the field.

Mbappe must now pay the price for that rush of blood.PSG still have four Ligue 1 fixtures to take in this season, with another domestic title already wrapped up.

It does, however, remain to be seen if Mbappe will figure again for Thomas Tuchel’s side this term.Having been forced out of the club’s next three fixtures, he will be unavailable for games against Nice, Angers and Dijon before PSG wrap up their campaign away at Reims on May 25.

A statement released by the French Football Federation (FFF) on Friday read: “Meeting on Thursday, May 2, 2019, the Federal Commission of Discipline, following the final of the Coupe de France between Stade Rennais and Paris-Saint-Germain, Saturday, April 27 at the Stade de France, sanctioned Kylian Mbappe with a three-game suspension and opened proceedings against Neymar.”With Mbappe now aware of his sanction, a PSG team-mate is waiting to discover his fate.Neymar was involved in an angry altercation with a supporter after the Coupe de France final.

With emotions running high on the back of a penalty shootout defeat for PSG, the Brazil international was far from happy with the attention he received en route to collect a runners-up medal.Tuchel’s side had been two goals to the good against Rennes, but were unable to hang on to that advantage.

Mbappe was then dismissed two minutes from the end of extra-time on a forgettable evening for the capital giants. With the World Cup winner now sidelined, he will be unable to chase down Barcelona star Lionel Messi in the race for the 2019 Golden Shoe.

As things stand, a mercurial Argentine is leading the way as Messi has 34 goals to his name in La Liga, while Mbappe has managed 30 in Ligue 1.

Paris Saint-Germain 1 Nice 1: Cavani misses late penalty after Neymar's milestone goal

    wire-13090162-1556992363-478_634x469.jpg

Neymar scored his 50th Paris Saint-Germain goal and Edinson Cavani missed a late VAR-assisted penalty as the Ligue 1 champions' underwhelming end to the season continued with a 1-1 draw against Nice.

Having brought up his milestone PSG goal from the spot on the hour to cancel out Ignatius Ganago's fine 46th-minute strike, Neymar won a penalty in the closing stages when referee Frank Schneider used VAR to deem that Dante had fouled his compatriot.

However, with Neymar off the pitch having received treatment, Cavani failed to beat Walter Benitez, and the Uruguay striker was fortunate to escape with just a booking when his temper boiled over in stoppage time.

Thomas Tuchel's side had the title wrapped up on April 21, but have now won just one of their last six Ligue 1 outings.Patrick Burner's slack header almost provided Cavani with a tap-in early on, but it was Neymar who went closest to capping a bright PSG start when his wicked volley was kept out by Benitez.

Cavani should have done better after latching onto Julian Draxler's deflected pass, and his profligacy proved costly after the restart - Ganago hammering home from a tight angle.

Allan Saint-Maximin should have made matters worse for PSG in the 58th minute, only to hit the bar when faced with an open goal following superb work from the impressive Youcef Atal. And that miss was punished two minutes later; Neymar sending Benitez the wrong way from 12 yards after Burner's foul on Angel Di Maria.

Cavani had a goal ruled out for offside, but PSG were handed a golden chance to seal victory when Dante's late tackle on Neymar was punished by VAR.In Neymar's absence, Cavani stepped up, yet his spot-kick was a poor one, Benitez diving to his left to make a comfortable save and earn Nice a deserved point.

Frustrated by his miss, Cavani then reacted badly to Christophe Herelle's challenge, and could easily have seen red had his team-mates not dragged him away from trouble.

Espanyol 3 Atletico Madrid 0: Sloppy Rojiblancos overrun on the road

    13089520-0-image-a-97_1556990407665.jpg

Espanyol breathed life into their Europa League qualification hopes with a surprise 3-0 win over a lacklustre Atletico Madrid at RCDE Stadium on Saturday.Diego Godin's own goal on the stroke of half-time and Borja Iglesias' double after the interval lifted Rubi's side to within three points of seventh-placed Real Valladolid, who entertain Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

Atletico, having watched Barcelona sew up the LaLiga title last weekend, looked very much like a team with little to play for as they slumped to a sixth league loss of the season.

Diego Simeone's men still require a point from their final two fixtures to ensure Real Madrid cannot sneak into second.
Espanyol, without a clean sheet in their 11 previous matches, almost gifted Atletico an early lead.Diego Lopez denied Alvaro Morata in the third minute after the striker dispossessed Mario Hermoso, who soon returned the favour by cleaning up his goalkeeper's handling error.

Atletico appeared equally vulnerable and fell behind in first-half added time.Adria Pedrosa burst down the left, skipped past a challenge and saw his cross trickle in off Godin's outstretched boot.Iglesias doubled the margin in the 52nd minute, racing onto Oscar Melendo's well-weighted ball in behind and beating Jan Oblak from a tough angle.

Only Oblak stood between Espanyol and a deserved third as the half wore on, parrying thumping strikes from Sergi Darder and striker Iglesias. The latter was not to be denied his double. Juanfran stepped across Javi Puado's path in the box and, in the 89th minute, Iglesias dispatched the resultant spot-kick into the top-left corner to complete a convincing victory.

Bournemouth 1 Tottenham 0: Nine-man Spurs lose to late Ake header

    13084528-6992011-image-a-81_1556976250101.jpg

Tottenham still have work to do in the race to finish in the Premier League's top four after their nine men lost 1-0 late on at Bournemouth on Saturday.

Third-placed Spurs would have secured Champions League qualification for next season with victory, but they were brilliantly denied on numerous occasions by 19-year-old debutant Mark Travers in the Cherries goal before spectacularly losing their cool.

Son Heung-min was sent off just before the break, having returned from the suspension that kept him out of the midweek European semi-final first-leg defeat to Ajax, and Juan Foyth – introduced as a half-time replacement – was also trudging down the tunnel just two minutes and 13 seconds after the restart.

And after keeping Bournemouth at bay for the majority of the second half, Spurs allowed Nathan Ake to nod in the winner in the first minute of stoppage time.Mauricio Pochettino's men may now require a result against Everton four days after a trip to Amsterdam as their involvement in the Champions League both this season and next remains uncertain.

Travers quickly found his feet with a string of superb saves, turning away a powerful drive and a testing header from Dele Alli, as well as twice denying Lucas Moura as he exploited space behind a haphazard Bournemouth back line.

But an incredibly one-sided contest took a turn on the stroke of half-time as Son saw red.Referee Craig Pawson had earlier turned down a pair of Bournemouth penalty appeals and generously opted against showing Eric Dier a second yellow card, but Son was dismissed as he shoved Jefferson Lerma to the floor.

Foyth and Victor Wanyama were introduced at the break as Pochettino took no risks with Dier and Toby Alderweireld, also cautioned, yet the substitute defender soon lunged in on Jack Simpson and Spurs were reduced to nine men.

Bournemouth looked as though they would be frustrated by a resolute Tottenham defence, but Ake powered in a header from Ryan Fraser's corner to land another blow to Pochettino's men.

Bayern Munich 3 Hannover 1: Bundesliga leaders take another step towards title

    13087766-6992517-image-a-56_1556986283840.jpg

Bayern Munich won 3-1 at home to relegation-threatened Hannover to move five points clear of Borussia Dortmund in the race for the Bundesliga title.Niko Kovac's side seemed set to cruise to victory at the Allianz Arena on Saturday, with goals from Robert Lewandowski and Leon Goretzka earning a 2-0 half-time lead.

But Jonathas swiftly halved Bayern's advantage with a penalty given after a VAR check for handball against Jerome Boateng, although the Hannover striker let his team down by getting sent off within four minutes of his goal.

The 10 men struggled to contain Bayern thereafter and Franck Ribery hit the third with seven minutes to go - leaving Dortmund needing a win to keep pressure on the leaders when they go to Werder Bremen later on Saturday.

Genki Haraguchi sent an early header off target for Hannover while Kingsley Coman and Lewandowski also failed to make the most of aerial opportunities in the opening exchanges. But the league leaders broke the deadlock in the 27th minute, a typically pinpoint right-wing cross from Joshua Kimmich powered past Michael Esser by Lewandowski.

Esser made good saves to keep out drives by Thomas Muller and Boateng but he could do nothing about Bayern's second goal, a superb 25-yard curler from Goretzka that nudged the post on its way across the line.

Goretzka could have added two more before the break as Bayern continued to push for goals, however Hannover cut the deficit from the penalty spot in the 51st minute.Boateng blocked a cross with his arm and half-time substitute Jonathas sent Sven Ulreich the wrong way.

Hannover's hope was short-lived, though, as Jonathas was dismissed in the 55th minute. The striker had been booked for a scuffle with Ulreich after scoring the penalty and was shown a second yellow then a red after catching Kimmich with his arm.

Goretzka went close again, but Kovac's side successfully shifted the spotlight to Dortmund with substitute Ribery adding a deflected third to make sure of the points before his fellow veteran winger Arjen Robben made a late cameo – a first appearance since November following a long-term injury lay-off.

Werder Bremen 2 Borussia Dortmund 2: Pizarro strike tees up Bayern for Bundesliga title

Former Bayern Munich striker Claudio Pizarro came off the bench to score an equaliser that left Borussia Dortmund's Bundesliga title hopes hanging by a thread after they threw away a two-goal lead in the last 20 minutes to draw 2-2 at Werder Bremen.Lucien Favre's men looked to have recovered from a disastrous 4-2 Revierderby defeat at home to Schalke last time out as goals from Christian Pulisic and Paco Alcacer put them 2-0 up at half time.

But two calamitous moments involving goalkeeper Roman Burki and defender Manuel Akanji undid Dortmund's hard work and allowed Kevin Mohwald and Pizarro to drag Werder level.

The result, along with Bayern's 3-1 victory over Hannover earlier in the day, left second-placed Dortmund four points behind the champions with two games left to play, and even winning them both may well not be enough.

Huddersfield Town 1 Manchester United 1: Mbenza kills off visitors' top-four hopes

    13116242-6994673-image-a-24_1557066429059.jpg

Manchester United's Premier League top-four hopes were ended after being held to a 1-1 draw by Huddersfield Town at the John Smith's Stadium on Sunday.Scott McTominay put United in front with an early strike from 16 yards that Jonas Lossl should have done better to keep out, although the Danish goalkeeper made amends with his part in the equaliser.

Lossl's pass was not dealt with by Luke Shaw and Isaac Mbenza was able to convert to earn the Terriers another famous result against United, who are now winless in six away matches in all competition after seeing Paul Pogba strike the crossbar twice.

United, beaten 2-1 here on their previous league visit, are now four points adrift of the Champions League spots with one game left to play.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men were given plenty of space to knock the ball around and it took just eight minutes for McTominay, who profited from some poor goalkeeping from Lossl, to open the scoring.

The hosts came close to finding an equaliser against the run of play when Karlan Grant got between United's two centre-backs and tested David de Gea with a low shot which the Spanish keeper kept out with his feet.Normal service was soon resumed as Pogba met Juan Mata's cross and turned it against the crossbar three minutes before half-time.

But United failed to push on in the second half and they were pegged back on the hour as Lossl launched the ball forward, Shaw failed to cut it out and Mbenza slotted it through the legs of De Gea.

Substitute Tahith Chong was denied by an excellent Lossl save, while De Gea thwarted Grant at the other end, and Pogba again struck the bar to compound United's frustration.

Chelsea 3 Watford 0: Blues edge closer to top-four finish

    13116098-6994689-image-m-112_1557066109249.jpg

Chelsea took a huge step towards Champions League qualification by completing a 3-0 victory over Watford at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.Tottenham's 1-0 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday opened the door for Chelsea to go third in the Premier League and they took advantage courtesy of goals from Ruben Loftus-Cheek, David Luiz and Gonzalo Higuain.

The Blues were under pressure for much of the first half and lost midfield enforcer N'Golo Kante to a muscle injury after 10 minutes, making the France international a doubt for their Europa League semi-final, second leg against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.

The recalled Eden Hazard assisted goals for Kante's replacement Loftus-Cheek and David Luiz in the space of three second-half minutes, before Gonzalo Higuain rounded off the scoring as Chelsea edged closer to a top-four finish.Watford started on the front foot and Troy Deeney had a header pushed onto the post by Kepa Arrizabalaga in the eighth minute, while Kante's injury gave the Blues more cause for concern.

Chelsea were a different side after the break and moved ahead in the 48th minute when Hazard picked out Loftus-Cheek to head home.David Luiz evaded Adrian Mariappa to nod another Hazard delivery past Ben Foster as the Blues turned the game on its head.

Foster produced a pair of strong saves to keep Pedro and Higuain at bay, but he was helpless when the duo combined and the on-loan Juventus striker dinked in a fine finish.

Watford were denied a consolation in bizarre fashion when Roberto Pereyra's free-kick hit the post and substitute Isaac Success headed in the rebound off an offside Andre Gray.

Club captain Gary Cahill was sent on to a rapturous ovation in the 89th minute for a final appearance at Stamford Bridge before departing when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Real Madrid 3 Villarreal 2: Mariano nets brace in Benzema's absence

    13118384-0-image-a-75_1557071294581.jpg

Mariano Diaz ensured Real Madrid coped without the injured Karim Benzema by scoring twice in a 3-2 win over Villarreal that helped Los Blancos bounce back from a dismal result a week earlier.

Zinedine Zidane's men did not have it all their own way against their relegation-threatened visitors, but Mariano's strikes in the opening moments of either half helped Madrid overcome the absence of their leading scorer and unsettled forward Gareth Bale, who was left out of the squad.

When careless play allowed Gerard Moreno to plunder an equaliser for Villarreal it looked as though Madrid's recent struggles would continue, but Jesus Vallejo restored calm around the Santiago Bernabeu with his first goal of the season before Mariano netted his second.

Substitute Jaume Costa had the final say courtesy of a stoppage-time effort, with the result leaving second-placed Atletico Madrid within reach for Real, who will still be left to reflect on an underwhelming campaign even if they do catch their rivals.
Madrid were toothless in their defeat at Rayo Vallecano but took the lead in opportunistic style after two minutes, Brahim Diaz dispossessing Santi Cazorla midway through the visitors' half before Mariano wriggled between two defenders and rolled a low shot beyond Andres Fernandez. The equaliser came nine minutes later and in almost identical fashion, with Casemiro the player to concede possession cheaply to Alvaro Gonzalez before Moreno hooked the ball just inside the post with Thibaut Courtois well beaten.

Dani Carvajal crashed a shot onto the post as Madrid looked to restore their lead quickly but they had to wait until five minutes before half-time when Marcelo's drive got tangled up in the legs of Samuel Chukwueze and Vallejo was on hand to tap the ball past the stranded Fernandez.

Four minutes after the interval, Mariano timed his run perfectly as he arrived at the far post to meet Carvajal's low cross and slam the ball into the net.Marcelo looked certain to score after his mazy dribble down the left flank took him into the box where Fernandez made an impressive one-handed save to parry his side-footed strike away from danger.

Villarreal refused to go down without a fight and their determination to grab a share of the points earned them a late consolation when Moreno played in Costa, who had time and space to pick his spot and beat Courtois with what proved to be the last chance of the game.

Salah 'absolutely okay' after head injury, says Klopp

Jurgen Klopp insisted Mohamed Salah was "absolutely okay" after being carried off on a stretcher during Liverpool's 3-2 victory over Newcastle United, but said the forward would require further medical assessment.Salah was unable to continue after clashing with Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, who appeared to strike the Egypt international with his hip as he jumped to clear a high ball in the last 20 minutes of the game.

With the second leg of Liverpool's Champions League semi-final against Barcelona just three days away, and the last game of the Premier League season following five days later, Klopp can ill afford to be without his side's leading goal-scorer.

But he gave a positive initial assessment of the 26-year-old's condition, telling Sky Sports : "We have to see. He got a proper knock on the head."He watched the game, obviously inside, and was absolutely okay."We'll have to do a further assessment of course."

The game was deadlocked at 2-2 when Salah was replaced by Divock Origi, who scored Liverpool's winner four minutes from time to the delight of his manager.
Klopp left Roberto Firmino out of his squad at St. James' Park, starting instead with Daniel Sturridge alongside Sadio Mane and Salah while the Brazilian continued his recovery from a groin injury.

Having seen his side beaten 3-0 at Camp Nou three days before their trip to Tyneside, Klopp commented on an exhausting end-of-season schedule for his squad, who returned to the Premier League summit."In the last three matches of the season we have three games in six days," he said. "It's just, wow, really hard.

"We are not the best football team in the world. We have to work for our success. It's not like we have easy games - every week we have to work."These boys today did it like they did it. I didn't see anybody being nervous. We just knew we had to try it.

"It was a tough game against a powerful and physically stronger than us team today. We had to fight. The boys did that and I couldn't be more proud."I was completely calm because it's destiny. The boys try everything, I see that every day.

    "They were so honest."
