:(Manchester United 0 Cardiff City 2: Solskjaer humbled by former club

    13405778-7020079-image-a-34_1557676103942.jpg

Manchester United ended a difficult Premier League campaign on a new low as they lost 2-0 at home to already-relegated Cardiff City on Sunday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was unable to sustain the upturn in form he inspired at United after arriving in December, instead slumping to sixth, and his former side added to the Old Trafford outfit's woes.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing was fortunate to be awarded the 23rd-minute penalty that he dispatched, but United could have no complaints with the same man's second goal as Cardiff departed for the Championship with their heads held high.

Mason Greenwood became the hosts' youngest starter in the Premier League at 17 and threatened throughout, yet there was no way past the brilliant Neil Etheridge.
Greenwood provided United's chief threat from the outset and his header drew a stop from the scrambling Etheridge, before Marcus Rashford dragged wide. But Cardiff's first notable forward foray resulted in the opener as referee Jon Moss controversially adjudged Diogo Dalot to have fouled Mendez-Laing, who sent David de Gea the wrong way from the spot.A determined response saw Etheridge help a deflected Greenwood drive onto the post and then save from Jesse Lingard, while the impactful debutant also prodded wide.

However, a slow start to the second half and a questionable tactical call cost United. Scott McTominay was moved into defence and dived into a challenge, leaving space for Josh Murphy to run through and square for Mendez-Laing to tap into the net.

Etheridge made unorthodox stops from Rashford and substitute Anthony Martial to preserve a two-goal advantage that Neil Warnock's men ultimately deserved, with the home fans still remaining inside an increasingly empty Old Trafford left to reflect on a season they will want to quickly forget.

Brighton and Hove Albion 1 Manchester City 4: Guardiola's men storm to back-to-back titles

    13405360-7020253-image-a-57_1557675368841.jpg

Manchester City came from behind to claim back-to-back Premier League titles with a 4-1 win at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Knowing only a final day victory could guarantee glory at the expense of Jurgen Klopp's relentless Liverpool, Pep Guardiola's men were stunned by a 27th-minute Glenn Murray opener.Final-day specialist Sergio Aguero found a response within 83 seconds and Aymeric Laporte converted Riyad Mahrez's 38th-minute corner to put City back in control of their destiny.

Mahrez, a surprise selection after an underwhelming debut season at the Etihad Stadium, made good on his record-signing status and Ilkay Gundogan added further gloss for the raucous travelling supporters who have now seen their team prevail in four of the past eight Premier League seasons.City were far from their fluent best early on and, after the Albion faithful merrily relayed news of Sadio Mane's 17th-minute opener against Wolves in an eventual 2-0 win at Anfield, they fell behind.

Murray found himself on the right end of a mismatch with Oleksandr Zinchenko when he converted Pascal Gross' corner at the near post. The response was instant and clinical, with Aguero drilling David Silva's delightful flick through the legs of Mat Ryan.

Brighton's goalkeeper then denied Bernardo Silva and Mahrez but erred in letting the latter save dribble behind. Laporte rose gleefully to power in Mahrez's looping delivery.A rasping Gundogan drive after half-time failed to penetrate a mass of bodies, although Ryan did not do the efforts of those in front of him justice in the 64th minute.

Mahrez deftly sashayed into space but found the ball on his weaker right-foot. The winger struck his speculative effort well, but Ryan should have done better than slapping into his top corner.

The Australia international was helpless 18 minutes from time as Gundogan – possibly on a farewell appearance for City as a new contract remains unsigned – curled in a majestic free-kick to get the party started.

Tottenham 2 Everton 2: Eriksen salvages draw as Spurs seal fourth place

    13406044-7020259-image-a-68_1557676705562.jpg

Tottenham secured fourth place in the Premier League on the final day of the season despite only drawing 2-2 at home to Everton, with Christian Eriksen's late free-kick salvaging a point.

Only a defeat and an eight-goal swing in favour of Arsenal would have seen Spurs drop out of the top four and miss out on Champions League qualification, and although Mauricio Pochettino's men suffered something of a European hangover after their exploits at Ajax on Wednesday, they held on to fourth spot with little difficulty.

It did not take Spurs long to find the breakthrough, as Eric Dier converted the first chance of the match, but Everton grew into proceedings and finished the first half in the ascendancy.

The visitors' improvement saw them come from behind to lead with goals from Theo Walcott and Cenk Tosun in quick succession after the break, but Eriksen's lovely strike 15 minutes from time at least saw Spurs avoid ending the campaign with a defeat.

Spurs showed no sign of any post-Amsterdam rustiness during the early exchanges and took the lead with just three minutes played – Dier smashing in from close range after Everton failed to clear a corner.Although the hosts looked in control, Hugo Lloris had to make a fine save down to his right after half an hour, just about preventing Bernard's shot from creeping inside the post.

Walcott got Everton a deserved leveller in the 69th minute, though, finding the bottom-left corner after being fed by Gylfi Sigurdsson. And Tosun turned things around soon after, bundling in from close range after Lloris' good save from a Michael Keane header landed at the feet of the Turkish striker.

But Eriksen clinched a share of the spoils a few minutes later, finding the bottom-right corner with a gorgeous 25-yard free-kick.

Leicester City 0 Chelsea 0: Stalemate seals third for Sarri's Blues

    13404422-7020273-image-a-8_1557673284346.jpg

Chelsea finished third in the Premier League after a final-day 0-0 draw at Leicester City. The Blues secured Champions League qualification last week and Maurizio Sarri made changes after his side needed penalties to down Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League semi-final.

Gonzalo Higuain missed the best chance to break the deadlock at the King Power Stadium on Sunday, but Chelsea ended the campaign above Tottenham after the Champions League finalists drew 2-2 home to Everton.

Kasper Schmeichel made a great reaction block to deny Ross Barkley in the third minute before the Leicester goalkeeper dived low to his left to keep out Willian's tame effort.

James Maddison and Higuain fired off target in a first half played at low tempo but Leicester should have struck first, Jamie Vardy playing a poor pass at the end of a quick break.Chelsea wasted an even better chance to open the scoring on the stroke of half-time, Higuain making a mess of a seemingly straightforward opportunity created by Marcos Alonso.

Barkley pulled a shot wide after the restart before a crucial Cesar Azpilicueta intervention prevented Vardy from having a clear sight of goal.Sarri brought on Eden Hazard with 21 minutes to go while Leicester introduced title-winning duo Shinji Okazaki and Danny Simpson for farewell appearances.

But, with little riding on the result, the match petered out, although Youri Tielemans shot over late on, Chelsea's attention having seemingly turned to their Europa League final against Arsenal in Baku.

Burnley 1 Arsenal 3: Aubameyang equals Salah & Mane in Golden Boot race

    13405046-7020359-image-a-9_1557674840024.jpg

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang continued his fine scoring record against Burnley as Arsenal concluded their Premier League season with a 3-1 victory at Turf Moor on Sunday.

The Gabon striker had netted braces in each of his previous two appearances against the Clarets and he repeated that feat to finish the campaign with 22 league goals, level with Liverpool duo Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in the race for the Golden Boot.

In-form Aubameyang, who netted a hat-trick in the Europa League semi-final second leg against Valencia on Thursday, capitalised on Jack Cork's misplaced pass to race away and slot home his first before a thumping back-post volley put the Gunners in control shortly after the hour.

Ashley Barnes' header swiftly pulled one back for the hosts but there was to be no equaliser as Eddie Nketiah got his first Premier League goal in stoppage time to ensure Unai Emery's side ended 2018-19 in fifth, one point adrift of the Champions League places.

Arsenal can still qualify for that competition with victory in the Europa League final against Chelsea in Baku later this month – a trophy Emery has already lifted three times.

Aubameyang appeared to have the Golden Boot on his mind early on as he diverted Henrikh Mkhitaryan's free-kick against the post and stung the palms of Tom Heaton inside seven minutes.

Barnes was denied by Bernd Leno in a lively opening that threatened to boil over when the pair clashed, resulting in a caution for the Burnley man, whose strike partner Chris Wood thumped an effort against the post with the goalkeeper beaten.

Shkodran Mustafi's superb block thwarted Matt Lowton before Joe Willock fired narrowly wide late in the half but Arsenal were ahead seven minutes after the interval as Cork's ball evaded Ben Mee and allowed Aubameyang to beat Heaton.

He hammered home Alex Iwobi's chipped ball to double his tally but within two minutes Johann Gudmundsson dug out a similar cross for Barnes to glance in.
Aubameyang somehow stabbed Mkhitaryan's low delivery wide from six yards – a miss that cost him the Golden Boot outright – before Nketiah's deflected effort from a tight angle squirmed through Heaton's legs and in.

Salah & Mane share Golden Boot with Aubameyang after missing out on Premier League title

Mohamed Salah will not consider the Golden Boot to be consolation for missing out on the Premier League title, especially as he must share the 2018-19 award with Liverpool team-mate Sadio Mane and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after seeing them join him on 22 goals.

The prolific Egyptian ended his debut campaign at Anfield as the leading marksman in the English top-flight.He netted 32 times last season, while finding the target 44 times across all competitions.

An impressive haul of individual awards came his way, with the Golden Boot just one of several added to his collection.

Salah has now claimed that prize in successive years, despite drawing a blank on his most recent outing. He held a two-goal advantage over Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero heading into the final day, leaving the race for the Golden Boot wide open.

But Liverpool’s most potent attacking weapon was off target in a 2-0 win for the Reds over Wolves, while Aguero – with history when it comes to final day drama - made his mark in City’s title-clinching 4-1 victory at Brighton.

Sadio Mane was on target for Jurgen Klopp’s side at Anfield, though, and ended the day with a double in a contest which counted for little in the grand scheme of things. The Senegalese forward briefly offered the Reds title hope, while taking his tally to 22 in what has been a personal-best campaign in front of the net.

Aubameyang also hit that mark for Arsenal on the final day during a trip to Burnley, with his brace helping Unai Emery’s side to a 3-1 victory. The Gabonese star has enjoyed a productive first full campaign in north London, despite seeing the Gunners miss out on a top-four finish.

Behind those to have reached the fabled 20-goal mark, Jamie Vardy leads the way.

The Leicester striker has retired from England duty to concentrate on his club commitments, and delivered another healthy return of 18 top-flight efforts for the Foxes this term. His former Three Lions team-mate Harry Kane has seen his domestic campaign ended by an ankle injury, but still added another 17 strikes to his stunning tally.

Raheem Sterling delivered the same return for Manchester City in a season which has seen him named FWA Player of the Year.

Eden Hazard, in what may prove to be a farewell campaign at Stamford Bridge, managed 16 efforts for Chelsea, while Callum Wilson hit 14 for Bournemouth.

Alisson takes Premier League Golden Glove with final-day clean sheet

    13407348-0-image-a-1_1557679532624.jpg

Liverpool may have missed out agonisingly on the Premier League title despite Sunday's win over Wolves, but there was some consolation for goalkeeper Alisson in the shape of the Golden Glove award.

The Brazil international kept his 21st clean sheet of the season to help the Reds to a 2-0 victory, which ultimately proved insufficient to topple Manchester City from the summit.

Sadio Mane netted both his side's goals to move on to 22 for the season, meaning he shares the Golden Boot with team-mate Mohamed Salah and Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Ederson had also been in the running for the goalkeeping award having gone into City's game with Brighton on 20 clean sheets, but conceded early on to Glenn Murray to end his chances.

Pep Guardiola's men stormed back with goals from Sergio Aguero and Aymeric Laporte to move back ahead of Liverpool, before Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan sealed a 4-1 win in the second half.

City thus retain their crown, finishing a single point ahead of Liverpool on 98 and 97 respectively in what has been an historic campaign for the two near-invincible challengers.

Alisson becomes the first Brazilian ever to win the Golden Glove, a prize which has run since 2004-5 and is given to the goalkeeper who keeps most clean sheets over the course of each season.

Previous winners include former Liverpool No. 1 Pepe Reina, who won three times in a row between 2006 and 2008; Petr Cech, the inaugural winner in 2005 before repeating his triumph in 2009-10, 2013-14 (shared with Wojciech Szczesny) and 2015-16; and last season's winner, Manchester United star David de Gea.

:(Solskjaer sees 'long and hard' road ahead for 'not good enough' Man Utd

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees a “long and hard” road ahead for Manchester United as a 2-0 defeat at home to Cardiff to end 2018-19 highlighted that the Red Devils are “not good enough”.

The Red Devils stumbled out of the blocks in the current campaign and ended on a low note after suffering another humbling setback at Old Trafford.Hope was briefly rekindled when Solskjaer took the reins and delivered an upturn in results, but he has seen his side collect just two wins in 12 since knocking Paris Saint-Germain out of the Champions League.

United finished without a victory in six and will be without elite European competition after ending the Premier League season in sixth spot.

Solskjaer admits he has a lot of work to, telling BBC Sport: “Today was not the problem, you can have all the possession and chances you want but we concede easy goals and not score at the other. That is not where our challenge lies, we have a long and hard way to be where we want to be.

“Mason Greenwood was brilliant, he was our best player by a mile and that says a lot about the kid. He came into the team with a lack of confidence and you can see that has take a total. Not surprised by his performance, we know he is capable of that.“It will take some time to close in on the top, we finished five or six points behind third, fourth, fifth and that has to be our aim. The top two teams have set a standard higher than before and we have to take up the next challenge.

“The work starts now, everyone has the summer off but we have to come back with a different mentality and different attitude of being a Man United team.“The ones who played, did well but it was not good enough.

Solskjaer had handed Greenwood, the club’s Young Player of the Year, a first start against Cardiff. He was unable to enjoy the occasion as the Red Devils slumped to defeat in front of a disgruntled fan base.

United are expected to spend in the summer transfer market, but there is clearly a bigger rebuilding job to oversee than many expected when the season opened with Jose Mourinho at the helm and the Red Devils expected to build on a runner-up finish from 2017-18.

Sarri says Chelsea must respect Hazard's decision on his future

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has expressed his hope that talisman Eden Hazard will remain with the club, but believes the final decision rests with the player.

Sarri spoke after a 0-0 draw with Leicester City that saw Chelsea clinch third place in the Premier League after securing automatic qualification for next year’s Champions League last week.Hazard started Sunday’s game on the bench, though he did enter after 68 minutes, with Sarri saying the move was made because of the midfielder’s exhaustion after a long season.

“Eden was tired today so he was on the bench,” the Italian told Sky Sports.“We tried to win with him later in the last 25 minutes."

Sarri then discussed Hazard's future, saying that he has earned the right to decide where he wants to play though the manager hopes he ultimately chooses to stay at Stamford Bridge.

He added: “I think Eden has played here in Chelsea for seven seasons, trying in every match to do his best and now it’s time to respect his decision, but I hope he will remain with us.”Sarri said his first season in England had been good, but that it could be wonderful with a Europa League title.

Chelsea play Arsenal in the final in Baku on May 29, and could see a tumultuous season end with silverware.“This season is good. We were in trouble two or three months ago but third place is a very good result.

“Now we have to go to Baku for the Europa League final and we have the chance for our season to be wonderful.”

Sarri’s side also made the final of the Carabao Cup final this year, losing on penalties to Manchester City. Before they conclude their season with a last chance to lift some silverware the Blues must travel to the United States for a game with the New England Revolution. The charity match dubbed ‘The Final Whistle on Hate’ will be played in Massachusetts on Wednesday and Chelsea announced this week they will travel with a full-strength squad.

Sarri admitted that his players needed rest ahead of the showdown with the Gunners, but also that he thought the game was in a worthy cause.

Proceeds from the clash at the Gillette Stadium will go to a wide range of anti-discrimination charities.“It’s a double feeling. I’m happy because we go there for a good reason.“As a coach I am worried because we are tired and we need to rest.”

‘Man Utd are in trouble with Pogba & Alexis’ – City to dominate Manchester & Premier League, says Gallagher

Manchester United are “in trouble”, says Noel Gallagher, with the former Oasis star seeing the struggles of Paul Pogba and Co set to continue as Manchester City go from strength to strength. The Red Devils once dominated the scene in their part of the world, as well as the bigger picture of English football and Europe.

Those at Old Trafford have, however, suffered a rather humbling fall from grace and been forced to watch on powerlessly as ‘noisy neighbours’ have taken to the lofty perch they previously occupied.City have just wrapped up a fourth Premier League title and remain on course for an unprecedented domestic treble, with an FA Cup final date against Watford to come on Saturday.

United, in contrast, have ended the 2018-19 campaign empty-handed, without Champions League qualification and with serious questions being asked of supposed star turns and the direction in which the club is heading.City fan Gallagher is delighting in those struggles, telling talkSPORT of the differences that now exist on opposing sides of the Manchester divide: “It’s all about the team [at City].

“The other mob in Stretford, they’re just buying individuals. You see [Alexis] Sanchez and [Paul] Pogba.“They’re in trouble. They remind me of where we were in the late 1980s/early 90s – they’re just trying to buy their way out of trouble now.“As long as [Pep] Guardiola’s here, they’re not getting anywhere near us. No one is.”

Liverpool got to within a point of City in this season’s title race, but Gallagher is not convinced that the Reds will be able to maintain those standards and come back into contention next term.He added: “Even next season, can Liverpool be any better than that? They’ve jammed it this season.

“I think next season, Liverpool don’t get near us either.”City will, however, be placing even greater emphasis on Champions League success next season, having once again failed to put themselves in contention for the most prestigious of European crowns.

Liverpool are in the hunt for that trophy, with Jurgen Klopp’s side set to face Tottenham at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid on June 1.

Barcelona expect Chelsea bid for Coutinho as Camp Nou board consider sale

Barcelona's hierarchy are bracing themselves for interest from Chelsea in Philippe Coutinho as the Blues go in search of a replacement for Eden Hazard.

Goal understands that even though Coutinho wants to remain at Camp Nou despite a disappointing first full campaign, some members of the Blaugrana's board of directors are keen to sell this summer. The Brazil international has failed to impress since arriving from Liverpool in a £105 million ($135m) deal in January 2018, despite playing his part in two Liga title wins.

And while he has struggled to fully win over supporters in Catalunya, their relationship has suffered in recent weeks after his celebration after scoring against Manchester United in the Champions League.

Fans were unhappy at him placing his fingers in his ears so as to drown out his critics following his long-range strike against the Red Devils, and jeers from the stands have become more prevalent as a result.

A disappointing performance against his former club at Anfield as Barca crashed out of Europe saw further questions asked of the 26-year-old, and the number of dissenting voices inside the club are now growing.

Chelsea, meanwhile, look set to lose Hazard this summer, with the forward having dropped his biggest hint yet that he wants to join Real Madrid.

Though the two clubs are still a long way apart on a final fee, talks are ongoing, and the Blues are expected to earn at least €100m (£90m/$118m) from the sale of the Belgium international.

Given Hazard's importance to Maurizio Sarri's side - he scored 16 goals and laid on 15 assists in the Premier League alone in 2018-19 - a replacement is highly likely to be sought should their FIFA-inflicted transfer ban be delayed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).It is understood that a decision on the two-window long suspension for registering senior players will be made before the closure of the upcoming transfer window, meaning a potential swoop for Coutinho would be viable.

Sarri is yet to speak to Chelsea's hierarchy regarding transfer targets for the summer, given the Blues still have the Europa League final to play on May 29 as well as the potential for them not being able to make any new additions to their squad until 2020.

But it is likely that both Sarri and the club will have their own targets, and Barca are of the belief that Coutinho will be on at least one of those lists given his experience of the Premier League and ability to play a similar role to that of Hazard.

Should an offer be forthcoming for the playmaker, there will certainly be those inside the Barcelona boardroom who would consider allowing the third-most expensive footballer of all time to leave the club.

Coutinho's potential departure could be one of a number of big name sales at Barcelona this summer, with Ivan Rakitic close to agreeing a €50m (£43m/$56m) move to Inter while Samuel Umtiti is being pushed towards the exits after an injury-hit campaign.
