Common opposition candidate Gen (retd) Sarath Fonseka postponed a scheduled visit to address an election meeting in Batticaloa, but went ahead with his proposed meetings in Ampara, a journalist based in the area said.
He said that some 600 policemen from the eastern division had been called to provide security for a meeting in Tangalle and Embilipitiya, another group had been summoned by the DIG for a conference to discuss security arrangements for the proposed visit by the President thereby depleting the security arrangements in the area.
The Batticaloa meeting will be rescheduled.
However Gen Fonseka addressed meetings in Ampara.
Gen Fonseka is due to address meetings in Trincomalee.
