Yes, Google chrome is essentially a closed source freeware that is based on open source Chromium browser. I have done a few small contributions to the original Chromium project back in the day

The android we have on our device, there are many closed source changes done by the device manufacturer and google.
I don’t think we can even purchase a device with vanilla open source Android. Even if we build it from the source by ourselves, we might need proprietary drivers/competibility changes to run it on an actual physical device.

Open source means source is open to anyone. However, current google version of the Android is not fully open source. It consists of many closed source components. Also open source code is not up-to date, google keeping the latest code private, so the open source code is not upto date now.

Yes. As I know Android core is open source. Not sure about the proprietery closed source things google adds on top of it. Also not sure about how core source code is updated.

But it does not contain the latest changes. For an example, some code related to the next major update of the Android. There are multiple reasons for it, code could contain upcoming new features, also it could contain patches related sensitive security issues. There are some valid and business reasons for that.
