this is not a big gain for sri lanka..bcoz we still have colombo port which is 27th in world ranking..maximum throughput in port of colombo is 3.5 millions of ETu(equvelent twinty units).. 70% of them are trashipments and rest of lacal handlings... hambanthota is be very useful in local handlings..because deviation time from main shipping lines is less than to port of colombo...i said this is not a big gain for sri lanka bcoz deviation time is not the most important factor that cargo services are looking for... therefore it cant be assume all the cargo services in main shipping line will be used new port ..should be an increment but it not in vast manner...may be little...
there is a expansion project in port of colombo .. i think that is may be more useful than new port .

yea remember they tried to run the Sethu Samudram Project. which would be a shi^^^^^ problem for sri lankan economy and environment. BCoz it would clear the sand barrier in Mannar. Luckily Nature it self taught a lessonm to them. the sand barrier got filled by itselt despite of the digging.

lets play it carefully. They could play good ally or smart enemy. They have meddled with the internal politics of almost every one of its neighbours and made sure the neighbouring countries dont develop beyond indias control.

But at the same time they gave us immense support in the UN and other international scenarios. So we really have to play it careful with them.

Keep ur friends close , ur enemies closer ! wonder where india fits in !?

Sri Lanka port is part of Chinese harbors built around the Indian ocean called the ring of pearls, with other harbors in Burma and Bangladesh forming the rest of the ring, for china its a strategic investment in their long term plan for dominance

To paraphrase a writer in Dailymirror, sri lanka could be the next hot spot causing the cold war between west and the East

yes sri lanka will benefit from this, there is no question about that
but we have to make sure we are not played out by our donors

and also this strategic advantage will be lost if India goes ahead with the Sedu samuthiram project.

SO have to tread with caution.:nerd:

Good point we have to tread carefully and not piss them off too much, they will play dirty if it happens

    agreed machchan
Sri Lanka can gain in 5 years what it lost in 30 years
if we have strong national policy ( which we don't) in all important matters
    definitely big opportunity

maybe a window of opportunity, which we shouldn't miss :D
