Deepavali is celebrated throughout India on the 15th day of the month Kartik (October/November) in the Hindu calendar, which in fact is a Lunisolar calendar (moon & sun). It falls on Amavasya (Ammavaasa), the new moon night, that ends the month of Ashwina (Ashvin/Aasho/Aswayuja) and begins the month of Kartika. The 5 day festival begins on the 13th day in the dark half of Ashwin and ends on the 2nd day in the bright half of Kartika. As the calculation is primarily based on the moon, the day of Diwali Festival varies in the Gregorian Calendar between the 13th October and 14th November every year. It can also differ by 1 day, depending on the location in the world.

Diwali (also known as Deepavali) is an Indian festival, celebrated by the Indian community of the world. It is popularly referred to as the festival of lights, as it is seen as a triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.

Today, Indians around the world will rise to freshly cleaned homes and will put on new clothes. They will celebrate with friends, sharing food and sweetmeats (candy) and enjoy each other's company. As evening approaches, they will begin to light lamps along the doorways and window sills of their homes, as "guiding lights" for the Goddess of Prosperity.

In the attic...
erhm...Ivey....i think we can all appreciate your sentiments.....

but according to certain Sri Lankan Tamils...deepavali is the day of mourning for a "dead God" (not prabakaran....xD)....they don't celebrate it.....:dull:....i think....:oo:

EDIT > ok my bad...its the festival of lights....they mark the return of some God to life not death.....and also the Goddess of light as well....sooo confusing.....
