Guys
Actually this is kind of a help request. But I felt Elakiri Help is not the place for this kind of discussions.

My question is.
Anyone of you have done online shopping (lets say from US sites) for computer accessories or electronics?

It’s not about credit card security, shipping problems, buying guides etc.. but I’m bit confused about the custom taxes that may incur on the items we buy.

Let me get things straight here.. Actually I came across some good deals related to computer accessories(High End Video Cards, Processors) and items like Digital Cameras. Everything else about buying these things online is ok with me. But I’m skeptical about the possible Sri Lankan Customs taxes that may incur upon the goods (If the taxes are too much- might make the item to cost equal or higher to SL price- it may be wiser to buy from SL rather than going for good deals online. Isn’t it?) Has anyone got any idea how or what taxes will be applied on this kind of items. :baffled:

Really appreciate your thoughts on this. If you have any experience related to this pls shed some light

Thanks.

Anyway guys. I thought to let you knw the aftermath... :P

I just went ahead and bought a digital camera from Amazon.com. (It is a really good one and I was so tempted to buy it. Of course I had a look here: in SL it costs around Rs. 35k) Price on Amazon was about 1/3 of the local price(abt $115).

Its only shipped to US from Amazon but I had a US postal address ready. From there I got the package couriered. DHL paid all the damn local taxes before bringing it to my doorstep. Whole thing took little less than 2 weeks and the service was at best both by Amazon, my US remailer and DHL. (Camera is really good too. I'm happy :D )

But the local taxes here @ SL made me so irritated!!!
They have implied lot of taxes(customs duty, VAT, EDI, CESS, etc..) and it is even close to the items' original price. (Fortunately its for Digital cameras: for computer accessories taxes are much lower than that)

Bottom line is : Yes buying online saved me quite a few thousand rupees(compared with buying locally). However I'm really unhappy that they extort that much of hard earned money as taxes. Yeah.. I'm still paying the government taxes even with my salary u knw. ;)

But anyway hope I'll be shopping soon(after I got some money at hand of course) for more things. But it needs a careful analysis of prices b4 buying. You always have to calculate the cost with taxes in mind unless for items is free of taxes.

    cheers
