Yes machan. and do remember that GPS signals are weak inside buildings. it might take several minutes to lock with GPS satellites even in a clear day. once it get locked on with GPS satellite it'll work under normal conditions (Example: Rainy or cloudy day, inside a car etc)

Wat do u mean by lock? do we have to do anything to lock the location?
GPS is not working good in my 5800. Can you suggest anythng to improve the performance of GPS? ( I have the latest firmware in my phone).

gps is available but no navigation is avialable for lanka
also less sattellites therefore you have to go outside to get good reception
i tried once in my n95 while in the car
you can get the maximum speed, traveled distance etc, also there is a s/w c garmin mobile xt
with that also you can download and view maps but no proper map for lanka
dialog and some other company designed the navigation map for A, B and colombo city roads
if anyone can hack that and extract the map then we all can have navigation also

Map Eka Rename karada? you have to rename the map which is downloaded from
http://rapidshare.com/files/61579171/SriLanka.img to gmapprom.img. extension has to be .img machan. Then copy gmapprom.img file to E:\Garmin in your mobile phone

    Here's the workaround again..

    INSTALLING GARMIN XT MOBILE

1)Download Garmin XT From this link

    http://www.garmin.com/software/GarminMobileXTforSymbianS603rdEdition_50050.exe

    2) Just copy Garmin and other folders using provided application. (Just run exe file, please make sure to plugged your mobile through Data cable
and it's in USB Mass storage Mode)

    3) After copying, install the Garmin.sis file from phone using your phones built in file manager or similar (This should be locate inside E:\Garmin folder in your phone (Make note: E: is your Mobile phones Memory Card)

    UNLOCKING GARMIN XT MOBILE

    1) Open application on mobile

    2) Launch Garmin, go to Settings -> About (Make note of your UNLOCK ESN .WRITE IT SOMEWHERE.THIS IS YOUR UNIT ID)

    3) Launch the garmin keygen (its in the zip), and type in your "UNIT ID" in the bar

    4) Hit the first (top most) generate button to generate device unlock key.

    5) Copy this code to a new.txt file. Then save

    6) Rename the .txt file to sw.unl (be carefully not txt extension but unl)

    7) Put sw.unl file inside Garmin folder in your phones memory card and restart Garmin (Now on Garmin will recognize your inbuilt gps)

    INSTALLING MAPS

    1)Download Sri lanka Map From

    http://rapidshare.com/files/61579171/SriLanka.img

    2) ONLY three names are available so as to be recognized by Garmin: gmapprom.img gmapsupp.img or gmapsup2.img. (Gmapbmap.img is the base map of whole world so don't use this name except if you don't want a base map). so use one of these names for the maps. So only three different named maps can be used at the same time.

2)Rename Supplied Sri Lanka Map to gmapprom.img

    3) Then copy gmapprom.img file to E:\Garmin folder which is located inside your mobile (Make note: E: is your Mobiles MMC, it might be different in your phone)

    UNLOCKING MAPS

Sri Lanka Map is already Unlocked so no need to go beyond this step.

Installed to my Nokia 5800 & works like a charm!,Thanks bro!

Machan getting a lock with Satellites means that your phone is receiving signals from them. this will take some time initially. so be patient at initial stage. it might require sometime. clear sky is a must since we are using inbuilt GPS which is in a phone. (Not dedicated GPS device, which is far more accurate and easy to use)

Lankawe ona thanaka GPS wada, ona wenne Honda software ekakui Maps tikakui..
    GPS signals ona ratakata wada..

Im Using a Nokia E71 plus using a software called Garmin Mobile XT to Navigate.. GPS is working anywhere in the world but you need to have map. i have a Sri Lanka map loaded in my phone including all the roads.

Here's the Guidelines on how to install it on your phone. download this file and read How To.txt inside the Zip File.

Sri Lanka Map is in here. this have most of the roads available in Sri Lanka.

to install this you need to have S60 (Nokia Symbian phone equip with inbuilt GPS) phone.
thanks bro for taking credit for my posts i did on gps navigation in srilanka including 'detailed' instructions which i believe are more detailed than yours for comparison.

least anyone of you in this http://www.elakiri.com/forum/showthread.php?t=215093&page=2 page could do is the thank me for the original posting of gps navigation in srilanka.

without me, no one would have ever known that garmin had a srilanka map.

see following links and thread numbers ( all which i wrote)

the link below has real pictures of the device in action. and it shows what native nokia map which comes with all Nokia N series and E series show for comparison.

my advice to you all, before u get this working, first do the following -

    1) get a stable car phone holder, clip on and sticky ones dont stay properly, modify that to your advantage. last thing u need is your 'expensive' phone going out of the window or falling inbetween your legs.
    2) get a phone charger for your phone, a must
    3) figure out and try to use a one press button activation for garmin as opposed to having to go through the menus to load the bloody program. first two attempts and ull say, nah, its ok but after that, ull feel like throwing the phone out of the window.
    4) when approaching checkpoints, figure out how to hide the program in the background by pressing home button or jog dial on the phone and pray it doesnt speak ' checkpoint ahead or satellite reception lost'.

last point, as long as u input a destination, no matter where u are in srilanka, ull get directions but use your head also, dont follow exactly what the device tells you, happend to me and i nearly went through someones house and it was raining cats and dogs and i was in the jungle ok.

and yes, the map has faults, but ive been working on it for the past 7 months and have updated it considerably. the case of 'no road names, cities, towns' all fixed now by ME!.

for the record, id like to say this so everyone can understand a fundamental fact - Ive been using this software and map since december 2008, the map came out in november 2008. found it by accident when i was doing research on nokia e71, a girl talked bout it on youtube and i got thinking, if she can do it, so can i, 3 part video, see it.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2X9sUh2PWo&feature=related
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCvLkyPyW0c&feature=related
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCOYzpqW5vQ&feature=related

credits go to her for the videos.

speaking of which, do anyone of you have Nokia E71, and have you tried to get wifi working, ull see that it doesnt work. I worked on the fix aswell. if anyone wants it, you know where to find me.

tested thoroughly out of colombo where significant map errors are likely to occur but have come across 4 only so far. a friend of mine is correcting the map as we speak and updated map will be posted at his discretion. as for me, ill continue developing the maps, adding hotspots as I go along. and I, single handed, collected over 5000 waypoints which I marked individually in person at those locations hence accuracy 100% as opposed to values taken from websites.

and anyone who uses Nokia 5800 with garmin mobile xt and it crashes on you. ha ha, u have a bug in the phone,no way to fix it, even with latest firmware.

so if you have any sense of manners, credit me for the initial boost of making everyone aware that gps works in srilanka and there ARE maps for srilanka. even now, all i see is,

    1)gps is useless in srilanka
    2)its controlled by the gov,
    3) its no use, there are too many roads for gps to work
    4) roads change from two way to one way
    5) gps takes too long to lock
    6) gov has banned it- gov cant ban something foreign to them. they have no power of it.
    7) maps not as good as google maps - bullshit. to me, garmin maps superior to google maps. google maps good, only for colombo. and I hate to see your monthly phone bill if your using google map for navigation.
    8) last and my favourite, gov can track u if u use gps in srilanka.

there are two ( not one) provider who is selling gps navigation on mass market now, they are - Dialog and Sunlanka. have seen both, tested both. go see for yourselves and come to your own conclusions. and then see my pictures of my design. then ull realise something...

    thanks...

ps: i have nothing against this person dinuksha_asela, but id advice before u speak, think what ur saying, as it can land you in serious shit like lawsuits. I wont go that far, i can if i want to as am also a lawyer.

    ironbutcher_x,

Mate, if you need credits, so be it. you can have it. i found the software completely outside from Elakiri threads (which you previously posted).I just responding to the forum members posts and helping them how to install it and use it.

Here's the link that i found the installation instructions

http://www.mobilesmania.com/forum/i...&p=608210&hl=Garmin&fromsearch=1&#entry608210 (This will require a login)

    OR

    here

    http://www.martin-gardner.co.uk/how-to-install-garmin-mobile-xt-ver-20-on-your-n95-n95-8gb/

please make note the posted date! that's on 02nd March on the previous link and on second link it's way back 2008.

And here's the Map's source based on Survey dept maps. please note that the maps uploaded date is in 2007 and not in 2008 as your "girl" friend said.

    http://mapcenter2.cgpsmapper.com/maplist.php?country=208&region=219

Original credit should go to the map creator since he's the person who created this magnificent map that we use. (Please download the uploaded map by me and find that it doesn't contain any names for cities, so i guess it's not your map that i used there. if you able to correct the map by yourself that's a great achievement indeed.)

what i did is getting both map and software and create a Installation instructions out of that. that's it. i know from my side that i did a wrong b'cos i didn't search for previous GPS related threads. i acknowledge that it's my bad that i didn't saw your posts completely.

PS note: i don't know your a lawyer or not, but Mate, please Get your facts correct before you accuse someone else. and this is for the other guys in this thread, please note that I'm not going after any credits. if you guys found out that it's useful and working then that's it. isn't that we suppose to do, helping each other??? In a Forum??

ps: i have nothing against this person dinuksha_asela, but id advice before u speak, think what ur saying, as it can land you in serious shit like lawsuits. I wont go that far, i can if i want to as am also a lawyer.

And about the lawsuit? what's your accusation? Stealing your credits?? Lol.. What is with you? please don't make me laugh with your lawyer jokes with me mate!.. go fly a kite! as it that could help earn you some good old credits.. ;)

ok, i shall give my answer to your post. i read your post, interesting. yes u found the software outside elakiri, same here actually.

as for http://www.martin-gardner.co.uk/how-...r-n95-n95-8gb/ link, its dated sept 15th 2008.

the map i found was on piratebay after my 'girlfriend' as u put it told me bout it. for the record, shes 'not' my girlfriend but would like her to be. lol. her video post somewhere after sept 2008, no date given. and in her videos, she was showing USA map,not srilanka. shes american. the phone came out in july 2008, but i bought it in december 2008. i have never heard of mobile garmin before, so until that video i wasnt aware of it, and that made me look for this program and subsequently the map. like i said bout the map, i found it on piratebay and it was released on nov 2008. i downloaded that map on 30th december.

true, credits go to the person who digitized the map which is not me. but i found it and pieced together everything into a working program. and have modified the map during the past 7 months further.

i respect u for ur honesty and thank u for helping the forum bloggers to install this program.

bout the lawyer part, that was a bluff, was testing u on that. guess u fell for that trick. and what did i say there ' u can land yourself in shit but i wont go that far but i can if i want to'. i simply stated a fact. i dont sue people for taking credit for my work ok. and im not Mervin silva the thug.

about E71 wifi, i had that bug, it shows 'No Gateway reply' even with no encryption set. found the fix 6 months later, its a missing config file, put it in and it works now. had no probs with Nokia 5800 and wifi.

for the record, so i dont piss u off further, the forums are a big place, yes, there can be posts out there u miss. for that i cant blame you. after all we all human beings.

and if i may, i checked, ur post to elakiri - dinuksha_asela; 07-12-2009 at 12:47 PM. #12. that is the first ever post u did with respect to garmin gps and mobile phones. now see my date - 06-11-2009, 10:41 AM #24. so clearly, with all due respect, i did the first post before u did. and i posted to elakiri on 6-11-2009 but i have been using that program/map for 7 months prior to elakiri post.

just think bout this for a second, I could have publicly advertised a fully working navigation system for srilanka in the papers but that will sure to land me in jail for life as gps is 'still' banned. give it another 2years then it will be ok to publicly declare bout such an invention. and having gps on phones is ok as u can get away with it but a dedicated gps device can get you in serious trouble.
we all know how gov works right, one department doesnt know what the other is doing. so why take chances when u can avoid a conflict.

no offense but i dont post to forums, this is the first time in 15yrs of being on the internet have i posted to blogs/forums/posts.

i hope we can now, put this behind us and work together with the forum to develope this srilanka map further. after all u said it right. i quote - if you guys found out that it's useful and working then that's it. isn't that we suppose to do, helping each other??? In a Forum??

u provoked me, i reacted accordinly. no harm in that.

now lets put this aside. and get to work on some serious shit...

for the record fellow bloggers, what ever tweaks i do for this map, i can share with you, if u want me to. after all, its is our inherent right to share information freely.

    thanks
