[Ancient Magicks]

Hey guys, a new member here. I was born in Sri Lanka, but haven't lived there, I'm just wondering why

1) So much changed after the British left, and why the country was renamed from Ceylon?

2) The Tamils live mainly in the north and the Singhalese people in the south?

And how come the flag is so colourful, it looks like a tribute to Bob Marley.

I don't understand Singhalese so if someone here who speaks English could translate any answers for me, I know a lot of people here can speak English, I see a lot of English posts in the forums, so this is good.

Thank you R Girl for you response! I am really surprised that Reggae music has had such a huge influence on the country, though I remember some of my friend's Sri Lankan music, it had some interesting drum sounds, that could be the reggae influence I guess.

I don't know much about Reggae, but I guess Bob Marley himself would be proud.

the flag is nt a tribute to Marely ,, if it's it should hav a leaf of a kronic on it ,,, lol ,,, so u may b wondering why multicoloured ha ? well that's cos in sri lankan we have somany ethnic groups living ,, so to represent 'em it has colours

yeh have you noticed there's more of yellow color? that represents the reggae with sri lankan drum beats and stuff.

hell yeh he definitely would have been proud. In early 70's the presidents only hope was to bring Bob marley to Sri Lanka.. but he never succeeded.
now president Mahinda Rajapakshe a.k.a King is looking forward to bring another hip hop artist named Akon. may be along with some other reggae artists

I take it that this means she was being sarcastic about reggae, and the flag was not influenced by Bob Marley? Which makes sense in light of your recent post, haha good one R Girl.

The sounds I heard was from a musician called C.T. Fernando, I have no idea what he was singing about, but it was very nice to listen to, no wonder Sri Lankans are such happy people listening to such happy songs. My friend was teaching me the lyrics but I can't really remember them now, it's a hard language.

Something like seageree sukumaleeyey heluva rajusamyey - it's a nice song!

I think your country is so fortunate to have leaders that have involved themselves so much from the music, to the flag of the country itself, hopefully your current president will be as successfull as the good leader C.T. Fernando was in the 1970's.
