I'm having a very bad pain in my left ear. As a person who always believes in National Health Service in Sri Lanka, I went to the ENT clinic at near by government hospital in Gampaha. The good doctor had a proper look in my ear and told me that I have a fungal infection. So he wrote a prescription and I took it to the hospital pharmacy. Unfortunately I was told that hospital doesn't have any of the prescribed medicines and I have to goto a private pharmacy and buy them. It was 3 kind of capsules and one bottle of ear drops.
So I went to a pharmacy outside the hospital and paid Rs.1300 for the medicine. To my surprise  when I came back home I found out that ear drops they gave me is actually a lotion which is to be used on skin and scalp but not inside the ear. (I have a habit of reading the leaflet inside the medicine box) so I went back to the pharmacy and asked them about it. They told me that this is the only type of Beclomin (name of medicine) the COMPANY  brings to them and in Sri Lanka you can buy only Beclomin lotion to put inside your ear and they dont have proper Beclomin ear drops. they said they even give this to 6 months old babies. I asked all the other pharmacies as well and they said the same thing. I went ballistic so annoyed and looked online on the website of the Beclomin manufacturer.
It was an Indian company and they clearly show that they have Beclomin lotion, ointment, nasal spray, as well as Ear Drops. and on the website the price for the lotion which i bought was nearly three times cheaper than the price I bought in Sri Lanka. (45 SL rupees in India, 136 SL rupees in Sri Lanka)

Without having any other options I kept putting lotion in my ear instead of ear drops. now my ear is swollen and I'm in complete agony. I can not hear anything from my left ear and things getting pretty bad and some smelly nasty shiiit coming out from my ear.

My mother lives in Italy and she checked Beclomin ear drops in Italy and she told me that they don't have any made in India medicines in Italy. They only have SUPIRI European medicines and they don't RIP OFF people for their foods and medicines like they do in Siri Lanka. and she's worrying to bits that she couldn't help me.

PS: I'm not suggesting that you should goto a private hospital. all I'm saying is we should bring couple of European politicians to govern our country, health service, ministry of commerce and our consumer protection agencies (If there is any)

Lotion always advised to use external, you have taken a huge risk to put in your ears. you should consult this with your doctor before use.

This is serious you might get permanent damage to your ear or hearing ,goto general hospital or nawaloka or channel a better doctor somewhere...It seems antibiotics are not strong enough for your infection....

I forgot to mention, that I went back to the ENT clinic and showed Beclomin lotion to the consulting doctor and he advised me to keep on putting the lotion because this is what you get in Sri Lanka and Loads of other people are using the same. I was thinking What the heck so I took the risk.

Now I have doctors appointment on  next Wednesday to wash my ear. I don't know what does that mean but I'm hoping that they are not gonna fck up my ear for good this time.

Bless you all for been so concerned and showing empathy for my problem.

I was just wondering why the price of medicine is three times higher than the marked price on manufacturer's website?

And why didn't government hospitals have any medicines which prescribed by themselves? not to forget I had to pay Rs.1300 just for a small kan kakkumata at a government hospital
what if it is a big problem how much would that cost?.even though I paid money i didn't get the correct medicine and my infection is still deteriorating so what's going on?

Why a bottle of jam is more expensive in Sri Lanka than UK? Also milk powder and McDonalds chicken burger and chips is 4times more expensive in SL than UK. Forget about munching a pizza or enjoying a Redbull they are 2X expensive.

Funny thing is minimum wages in Sri Lanka is 100X less than UK.

Why so much tax on everything

Where does all the money goes ?

I had the same issue couple of months back lost my hearing completely from my right ear. Then went to this place called Golden Key in Rajigiriya and they simply washed my ear and everything is now back to normal. There were lots of stuff logged inside :/. The previous family doctor had given me some pills and ear drops, it worsened everything, so suggest you go to that place and get a look.

Well said mate. I'm gonna live my life in pitch black like a complete blind person when I'm in Sri Lanka. I don't wanna get shot at  do I ? There's nothing I can do to help. Thank you for your brilliant advise machan.

And the reason I went to government hospital
was in UK there's no pvt hospitals. only NHS.co.uk
and medicines are free of charge. Including CT, MRI and
all scans and everything they got in their local hospitals.

I had this kind of a ear problem to bro. :( But I didn't went to a government Hospital because i hate to waited in the queue for a long period of time. so I channeled a ENT specialist doctor at the Aisiri hosptial. first thing he did was he checked my ear and washed my ear in the first place and after that he gave me same ear drop as you got. But it had actually worked. My point is here in sri lanka heath care and services are piece of crap buddy. even we paid more to get a better service we didnt get any. :(:(

Cant you see man, that money has been used to pay for doctor's who prescribe lotions in place of ear drops :P and also to pay out ministers who buy those 3x times more pricey lotions only after going through fair and corrupt free tendering processes. Hurrah! that's double win for you man

    lol nice one
Incompetent doctors,  corrupt politicians, inadequate public services, appalling human rights, police brutality, sky high prices, half done roads without a payment which cause 100 of pedestrians to die on roadside every month or get run over by dare devil motorists on pedestrian crossings.

That is what I heard about Sri Lanka so far

Also so called only 2 lane super highway :D which is owned by Chinese government who charges a toll charge of half of a persons one day salary for one way journey. what a joke.

Also people jumping queues, no respect or good manners for each others. treating poor people like they are some sort of cheap shiit. upper class middle class disputes. Some people are so arrogant, condescending, Greedy, and deceptive. I can go on forever.

No child support, No housing benefits, No job seekers allowance. No disability allowance, no senior citizens allowance, no income support. not a single allowance from the government. they never even heard of these type of things. Basically you get fck all.

I pray for ya all and do pray for me too cos I'm here to stay in Sri Lanka for sometime.
