How to Overclock??

Well im a newbie in this overcloking field! So i would like to know about it!! If somebody can plz give me more info it will be greatly appreciated!

1. What is overcloking?

2. How is it done?

3. Any special software/hardware required for the process?

4. Does all processors support this?

5. Any possible bad side effects??

6. Should there be bad effects, will i be able to undo?

7. What are the chances that i will have to go to unity to buy a new processor?

8. Advantages and Disadvantages of overclocking

No, overclocking just increases clock speed of your hardware device..

Even after overclocking there shouldn't be any compatibly issues just because you overclocked it!!

Depends..

Overclocking is regarded as a task of PC enthusiast, if what you have now in your system is more than enough to do the job.. there's no real need to go for overclocking..

But some people feel the need to squeeze every bit of juice from their system, which relates to value for their money!!! So they go for it!!

So decision is entirely yours!!

CPU overclocking is done by either changing the FSB/HT Bus speed and/or changing the clock multiplier.
* Clock speed = FSB clock x multiplier

VGA overclocking is done by increaing the clock speed of the core and/or the clock speed of the memory.

3. Any special software/hardware required for the process?

CPU overclocking is done generally from BIOS and VGA overclocking is done generally using software.

Some motherboards have special hardware components that helps reach higher clock speeds, such as very very stable voltage regulators and many many BIOS options.

4. Does all processors support this?

Yes. At least the ones made in the last 7 years. But some can't change the multiplier. They are only limited to overclocking by increasing the FSB.

5. Any possible bad side effects??

If you increase the voltage too much it will permanently damage the wires inside the CPU. Running any component at a higher temperature will reduce its lifetime (overclocked or not)

6. Should there be bad effects, will i be able to undo?

No. Killing a component means KILLING it!!!

7. What are the chances that i will have to go to unity to buy a new processor?

If you don't play with the voltages, then "NEVER"

You can get a good SuperPI score
Seriously, it's free performance!!!

No disadvantages if properly done.

For example, an E6850 is same as an overclocked E6320 (different stepping, but pretty much the same). If Intel can sell their overclocked CPUs, how can there be a problem???

You want more performance.
You would spend another Rs.30000 or more on an E6850 or overclock your E6320 to 3GHz for free?

But there could be issues like standby wouldn't work after overclocking.
My LAN controller would not work if I overclocked the PCI-E to 110MHz because it works on the PCI-E bus
(Can't keep the PCI-E at default 100MHz with the overclock because it would fall back to a x1 speed :S...at least 101MHz works fine )

You can't overclock on that mobo. It is not meant to be overclocked.
You can however use the software called setfsb. It will let you overclock a little (if you are lucky)
There is no such thing called safe speed. Some people can overclock a P4 to 3.4GHz without increasing the voltages. Some people can do it upto 4GHz without increasing the voltages. (Since there is a 3.8GHz P4 model, you can use that as a target).
