Runing a component beyond the speed specified by the manufacturer

CPU overclocking is done by either changing the FSB/HT Bus speed and/or changing the clock multiplier.
    * Clock speed = FSB clock x multiplier

VGA overclocking is done by increaing the clock speed of the core and/or the clock speed of the memory.

CPU overclocking is done generally from BIOS and VGA overclocking is done generally using software.

Some motherboards have special hardware components that helps reach higher clock speeds, such as very very stable voltage regulators and many many BIOS options.

Yes. At least the ones made in the last 7 years. But some can't change the multiplier. They are only limited to overclocking by increasing the FSB.

If you increase the voltage too much it will permanently damage the wires inside the CPU. Running any component at a higher temperature will reduce its lifetime (overclocked or not)

No. Killing a component means KILLING it!!!

If you don't play with the voltages, then "NEVER"

You can get a good SuperPI score :P
    Seriously, it's free performance!!!

    No disadvantages if properly done.

For example, an E6850 is same as an overclocked E6320 (different stepping, but pretty much the same). If Intel can sell their overclocked CPUs, how can there be a problem???

    Usually no.

    Say you have a E6320 CPU (1.86)
    You want more performance.
You would spend another Rs.30000 or more on an E6850 or overclock your E6320 to 3GHz for free?
    ape ayya wade deela:) :)

Anusha aiya, just the answer i've being waiting for! Thanx alot!

Anyway do u know any software which can overclock my processor?
Its a Intel 2.8Ghz (Not with HT).

And u said that overclocking is done in BIOS! How is it done?

It's the motherboard that matters. Not the CPU.

Overclocking is overclocking...regardless of how you do it.

But remember, you will have to be ready to reset your BIOS many many times. New boards however doesn't require this, because they sense that an overclocking went bad and will restore default settings or let you go into BIOS and change the settings.

Well what i understand is to do this overclocking the only thing i have to do is to fireup my com..go to BIOS...and then change some settings??? Am i correct??? :baffled:

That's how you do it. But it's much much more time consuming to get your overclock stable. To do it properly, it might take up to a whole week!!!

i.e. push it a little up, check 6 hours for stability (if not stable, go back to BIOS and play with the settings), push it up further, check for stability......lol

But you feel great after you accomplish a good overclock.

Yeah thats absolutely correct! But i better keep my processor working in the way it should....coz im not in to heavy gaming/rendering like u!! And this works fine!!
After all to be honest i never thought overclocking was soo kinda dangerous!
Anith eka i dont hav $$$ buy a new processor!
