Brand really shouldn't be a problem. There's no clear cut difference in quality/performance between the two. Maybe if you go for a Toshiba or Asus you would get more reliability, but of course you have to pay a premium for that.

If anyone is pushing you towards a particular brand demand a logical explanation. People have their prejudices against brands for no reason at all.

My opinion - there's no difference between Acer and HP. Don't think in terms of brands but in terms of the performance that you will be getting for the price.

ABOVE ALL, DON'T BUY FROM 3RD PARTY VENDORS, (ex - Technocity a.k.a laptop.lk), IF YOU WANT A GENUINE ITEM (not a refurbished one) AND WANT TO CLAIM WARRANTY IN THE FUTURE. BUY STRAIGHT FROM THE AGENTS.

Check out this link. Buyer Beware!

man there's absolutely no difference between hp and Acer, or any other brand for that matter (except maybe sony and apple)
hp or acer do not manufacture or design their own products. instead they instead, they pick a lap manufactured by a chinese ODM, put their name and sell.

Many brands, including the major ones, do not design and do not manufacture their laptops. Instead, a small number of Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) design new models of laptops, and the brands choose the models to be included in their lineup. In 2006, 7 major ODMs manufactured 7 of every 10 laptops in the world, with the largest one (Quanta Computer) having 30% world market share.[47] Therefore, there often are identical models available both from a major label and from a low-profile ODM in-house brand.

The vast majority of laptops on the market are manufactured by a small handful of Original Design Manufacturers (ODM).[2]
    Major relationships include:

    • Quanta sells to (among others) HP/Compaq, Dell, Toshiba, Sony, Fujitsu, Acer, NEC, Gateway and Lenovo/IBM - note that Quanta is currently (as of August, 2007) the largest manufacturer of notebook computers in the world.
    • Compal sells to Toshiba, HP/Compaq, Acer, and Dell.
    • Wistron (former manufacturing & design division of Acer) sells to HP/Compaq, Dell, IBM, NEC, Acer, and Lenovo/IBM.
    • Flextronics (former Arima Computer Corporation notebook division) sells to HP/Compaq, NEC, and Dell.
    • ECS sells to IBM, Fujitsu, and Dell.
    • Asus sells to Apple (iBook), Sony, and Samsung.
    • Inventec sells to HP/Compaq, Toshiba, and BenQ.
    • Uniwill sells to Lenovo/IBM and Fujitsu.
