Tamils for Obama: Urges IIFA to Move the Award Ceremony from Colombo Until Justice is Found for Murdered Sri Lankan Tamils

Tamils for Obama is asking the India International Film Academy (IIFA) to move its award ceremony from Colombo to some other location. Holding the awards in Sri Lanka's capitol honors the country that murdered 40,000 unarmed Tamil civilians in a few weeks in May 2009, said the American Tamil organization, and white-washes the Colombo government's participation in the killings.

Hollywood, Calif. (PRWEB) May 17, 2010 -- Tamils for Obama has asked the India International Film Academy (IIFA) to remove their award ceremony from Colombo. Having the event in the capitol of Sri Lanka, they said, will help the Sri Lankan government hide their support for the killings and will make it appear that the Indian movie industry considers the killings not worth talking about.

The Tamils for Obama spokesman said "Most Tamils enjoy Hindi movies in their leisure time. They like the Hindi actors and actresses and appreciate the music and dramatic stories of the Hindi movies. They were shocked to hear that their favorite actors, actresses and musicians are planning to go to Colombo to hold an award ceremony.

"Many Diaspora Tamils urged us to convey this message to IIFA: that Tamils were shocked that their favorite artists can ignore the suffering caused by Sri Lankan state. The IIFA would be honoring Sri Lanka and overlooking their ruthless killing of Tamils."

It is hard to state an exact number of civilians killed during the last stage of the war, the spokesman said, but cited "One UN observer, Gordon Weiss, who was in Sri Lanka during the massacre, [who] stated 'I think most likely it's somewhere between 30,000 to 40,000' people killed.' This, in just a few short weeks," said the Tamils for Obama spokesman

Shahrukh to captain Bollywood cricket team

Shahrukh to captain Bollywood cricket team

Cricket and Bollywood are soon going to be shaking hands again, this time for another cause but only with a sense of festivity. The venue being Sri Lanka, the twenty 20 charity match between Bollywood and the Sri Lankan cricketers will be played at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo on June 4. Organised by IIFA, this one would surely get the crowds soaring in

To add to the delight, IIFA's Bollywood stars' cricket team is said to be captained by none other than Shahrukh Khan himself, while Kumar Sangakkara will captain the Sri Lankan cricket team. The festivity would be added by the local and Indian singers who would be performing there and the fans would have an opportunity the rub shoulders with their favourite stars. Add to that, the fact that the match isn't extremely serious, the general rules remain except that the Bollywood team gets to have eleven players in a rotating manner so that every player gets a chance to perform.

Sri Lanka Cricket along with the Sri Lanka Tourism are pleased to organise this match as the proceeds of this event go to Habitat and UNICEF.

Anil Kapoor to lock horns with Muralitharan in Sri Lanka

Muthiah Muralitharan is a name that scares many a seasoned batsman but Anil Kapoor is looking forward to face the ace spinner during an IIFA charity match in Sri Lanka.

The actor has not practised the game for a long time but that has not diminished his confidence.

"I am a great batsman and I am not scared to face Muralitharan," Kapoor said.

Asked whether he was preparing himself for the big day, Kapoor, 50, said he did not need much practice.

"I have not played much cricket. I think the last time I played the game was in IIFA only but I don't need much practice because as I said before I am great with bat," Kapoor added

Awards ceremony itself, only to be highly disappointed when they are informed that attendees are VIPs and invitees only. Seating is limited for even the VIPs themselves even though the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium at which the prestigious ceremony is to be held will only entertain a limited crowd of 2000 even though it will be able to accommodate a crowd of around 5000 after its refurbishment. Sri Lanka’s seat allocation currently stands at just around 500 seats

Over 650 people are expected to fly in from India of whom over 100 will include A-list Indian stars. The rains have forced the event organisers to redo their plans for transport – the celebrities will be brought to their hotels via train and bus.
