Hi Guys,
I'm trying to bring down an iPhone 4S from Canada. I checked with some courier companies, the rates are too very high! One of the cheapest courier company quoted me USD 80/- + they said; I may have to pay high duty charges for mobile phones and need to get an approval from Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRCSL) blah blah blah... If anyone have an experience in importing a phone, please guide me, thanks :-)

If you are gonna get it from a courier company there is a high probability that u'll be charged a tax for that (some hefty amount :S).. best thing would be to get it down through a friend or someone who will come to sri lanka 4m there...

listen. if the sender is a friend tell him to send the phone seperately in some other shaped small box. and the box and accessories later.
if not get it through registered mail. but try to get it in some other shaped box cos the post exchange people know iphones by the shape of parcel.
normally most registered parcels come directly home if not an iphone.

hmm don't use Fedex or DHL coz if it mark as $100 + they can't clear it themselves and give to you. So you will need to Go to the Custom near Katunayake don't remember the name of it. After that you have to get a paper from them and come again to TRC to get license and then you have to go to the custom again to clear it. And you will have to pay huge custom fee (previously I had to pay Rs.5000 for an iPhone 4 which is marked as $800, I paid less coz I went there through a custom officer :D )

If you use USPS then it will not be a problem it will directly come to Colombo 10, Dr. Wijewardana M.W Foreign Mail Exchange and in USPS sender can mark lower price and you will have to pay only few Rs as tax. If the sender sent it in a very small box there is a chance to come it directly to you home.

do anything as your wish. :D

First of all, am really sorry for later reply as I was busy with work, couldn't check EK recently. And thank you all so much for the replies. I get an idea now. I will try to get through someone coming from Canada. If not, as adult.junior said; I will ask my bro-in-law to pack the phone in some other shaped box, and send through reg.mail. Thanks guys for the advice :-)

Now please let me know if anyone can unlock an iphone 4S.
    What will be unlocking charges?
