In Local Election you should not worry about Party. Vote for your local candidate who does real work in your area. Do not worry about others. There are so many parties.It does not matter if it is JVP, SLFP, UNP, SLPP, SLMC, ACMC,JNA, etc. There are so many new parties too.
For e.g in Colombo area if there is a problem in Municipal Council Azad Sally or Rosy who would not come to help you, Vote for your local candidate,even though others will get elected since this time around you can vote only for a party. There is no preferential numbers this time around.
Vote also for a candidate who will likely to win other wise you are wasting your vote. All the people in your area will know good candidates who work,check it out.
Do not vote for election gimmick, like those people who give gifts to win, do not take them. You are electing a thief who will steal Then do not cry foul, because the one who voted is also a thief. A thief will not catch another thief.They will do more harm than good.
Ask for name list when election card is distributed. So you will know who is asking for vote in your area.
