Intel Drops Processor Prices
Intel slashes prices on several desktop CPUs, discontinues others
At the same time that Intel’s new Core i7-970 six-core processor is showing up on Newegg, the company has reduced the price on several other desktop CPUs, including a huge cut in the cost of the Core i7-870. The year-old quad-core was selling for $562, but its price was reduced 48 percent to $294. Other price drops weren’t as dramatic. The Core i3-540 drops 12 percent to $117, while a pair of Pentiums have also seen their prices slashed — the E6600 to $75 (an 11-percent reduction) and the E5500 to $64 (a 15-percent reduction). A couple of Pentiums have reached their end of life: The E6300 and E7400. In addition, the Celeron E3200 has been discontinued, though the Celeron brand manages to stay alive.
Is the i7-870 now a good deal, or would you rather have a newer Intel — or AMD — processor for a similar price? Let us know in the Comments section.
