I think in 2021 Japan passed a law that all the phones that sold must be Unlocked, I can't be sure of this better ask ur friend there.. i used to have a buddy who worked on phone shop there, i remember he told something like this, btw iphones are expensive there

i also got to know it.
problem what i see is, if it is sim free, it is almost like sim free GSM phones we had in 2000 or before ( I have no experience in modern sim free phones.)
if the theory is correct, then it is almost similar network locked phone.
