Denies he sought President’s support
Sanath Jayasuriya denied 0n Wednesday the reports that he met President Mahinda Rajapakse after being dropped from the side and vowed to make a comeback into the side on performance.
“It is completely false to say that I went to meet the President to seek his support to get back into the team. I cannot understand how or why a malicious story like that came up. The last time I spoke to the President was before I went to Australia” Jayasuriya said on Wednesday.
The 38-year old star player who retired from test cricket a few months back, has been dropped from the One Day International (ODI) side to tour the West Indies following a string of poor performances where he scored only 305 runs in his last 20 One day internationals at an average of 15.25.
However, the former Sri Lanka captain promised to break into the side once again saying he still has much cricket left in him.
“I have to focus now on the few domestic matches that are coming up and prove my worth. I am keen to perform and show that I am not finished. If I perform, then no one can overlook me” he said.
Jayasuriya said that the sports minister Gamini Lokuge contacted him and asked him whether he was informed by the selectors about his axing before ratifying the team.
“I told him that the chief selector Asantha de Mel had tried to contact me soon after selections were done but could not do so, but contacted me later in the night to break the news” said Jayasuriya.
