Niroshan, Machan i had a serious situation last week in paliyagoda bridge check point.. When I drive to colombo, i'm using google maps for street find purpose.. When they check in the point they found my external gps reciever on the dash board and asked about it. I told what is it and the purpose.. They told me that is highly restricted in SL since this war crime began..

There is no restriction on GPS receivers in Sri Lanka. THere are so many GPS enabled mobile phones. Even I have one.

Of course GPS is working as long as you have a clear sky. You can use Google maps to navigate. It is free. But only in Colombo area.

There is no such law for GPS receivers. Obviously most of the Army personnel art checkpoint don't know any SH** about GPS. If they do not know what is it they usually tends to boast about the laws and things that do not exist.
Dialog provide GPS navigation facility to general public. If it is restricted how can they do it?

I remember one time, I was carrying my laptop and the external hard disk. So the check point guy didn't know what a hard disk is and told me that I am not allowed to take those types of things on road.

There is one thing I understood with check points. Never use complicated words that those ppl do not understand.

well... as i know, GPS maps are not available for sl. and also the traffic info etc... but you can use your phone to connect to the satellite. without maps, theres no use. if you have s60 phone, then you can use google maps with your phone's integrated gps reviever. I did that with my ex n95 ;)

I don’t know for sure what the law on GPS devices is, but there is some talk about the government banning GPS devices in Sri Lanka. Read the following two news articles:
Govt. bans GPS facility for mobile phones – Ravaya
End of Tech Gadgets for Sri Lankans.

I’ve also talked with a friend of mine in customs and he too said to import GPS devices you need a permit from the defense ministry. Maybe there is a written law somewhere, but no one is enforcing it or cares about it.

As for your original question about whether or not GPS works in SL. They do work, only problem is there aren’t any usable maps (i.e : NokiaMaps, Garmin, Tomtom etc.) But there are digital maps of SL, you can pair your phone with a laptop and use them, or the other option is GoogleMaps. But none of the methods allow you to use it for turn-by-turn navigation or search for place names etc.. Like a real GPS navigator.

I do not think this law has been approved although there were news bulletins. Those news captures were from 2008 August almost a year ago. But all the GPS enabled phones are still FREELY available in the market. And also I do not see any threat by using a GPS receiver.
If so they should ban google earth also.

Most importantly this will not be an issue since the war is over in Sri Lanka....

But I agree with you. The map support for Sri Lanka is very very poor. I hope someone will do it soon...
