LONDON (REUTERS) - Countries can't simply lock down their societies to defeat coronavirus, the World Health Organisation's top emergency expert said on Sunday (March 22), adding that public health measures are needed to avoid a resurgence of the virus later on.

"What we really need to focus on is finding those who are sick, those who have the virus, and isolate them, find their contacts and isolate them," Dr Mike Ryan said in an interview on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show.

"The danger right now with the lockdowns... If we don't put in place the strong public health measures now, when those movement restrictions and lockdowns are lifted, the danger is the disease will jump back up."

Much of Europe and the United States have followed China and other Asian countries and introduced drastic restrictions to fight the new coronavirus, with most workers told to work from home and schools, bars, pubs and restaurants being closed.

Dr Ryan said that the examples of China, Singapore and South Korea, which coupled restrictions with rigorous measures to test every possible suspect, provided a model for Europe, which the WHO has said has replaced Asia as the epicentre of the pandemic.

"Once we've suppressed the transmission, we have to go after the virus. We have to take the fight to the virus," Dr Ryan said.

Italy is now the country worst hit by the virus in terms of the number of deaths, and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has warned that his nation's health system could be overwhelmed unless people avoid social interactions. British housing minister Robert Jenrick said that production of tests would double next week and ramp up thereafter.

Dr Ryan also said that several vaccines were in development, but only one had begun trials in the US. Asked how long it would take before there was a vaccine available in Britain, he said that people needed to be realistic.

"We have to make sure that it's absolutely safe... we are talking at least a year," he said.

"The vaccines will come, but we need to get out and do what we need to do now."

So my sister and my friends made me realize as a Sri Lankan I have a social obligation to share my experience.
I work in a busy hospital in West London as a doctor in ICU and anesthesia. Since the COVID 19 outbreak, my hospital has become one of the major hospitals treating COVID patients.
When my mum and my elder sister heard about the spread of the virus in the UK, and the plan of ‘herd immunity’ to get 60% of the population infected they were extremely concerned, and kept advising me to be cautious.
‘I am relatively young and healthy’ … Even if I get it's going to be like a common cold and flu’. This was my thinking until I actually started getting first-hand experience treating corona patients.
If you think only the old and frail will get affected, think again.
I am sure the 45yr old who returned from a cruise now on the ventilator in our ICU or the 31yr old intubated by my colleague yesterday or the 50yrs old who has climbed the Everest few months back in my friend's ICU thought so too...
NHS in the UK is facing its biggest crisis ever. It is absolutely chaotic at work. This pandemic is beyond what we have ever imagined. We are shell shocked. We have exceeded our ICU capacity, and now converting theatres in to ICUs. Few days back we exceeded 100 positive COVID patients and now stopped even counting. We have a shortage of personal protective equipment, we are under staffed and the staff is getting exhausted.
Even though I have a lot of faith in our health care system in Sri Lanka, the reality is we do not have the resources (staff, ventilators, personal protective equipment, etc…) to fight this battle.
Yes, you might be one of the lucky ones and you might have very mild symptoms even if you get infected. But remember that this won’t always be the story. Trust me... Being in ICU on a ventilator is not a fun ride.... And it will be a lot worse if you have to fight with hundred other people to get a ventilator given our low ratio of critical care beds.
My dear friends in Sri Lanka hope you all keep this in mind when the curfew is lifted. Do NOT underestimate this virus. Don’t think it's just the old and the frail it could be you!
Let's not be a part of burying our kith and kin....
If we play our part right, we are going to win this.... There IS light at the end of the tunnel.
