Nov 21, Colombo: The General Secretary of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Minister Maithripala Sirisena today announced that he is the Common Opposition candidate contesting for the presidency against the incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Addressing the media at the New Town Hall Minister Sirisena said he served 13 years as the General Secretary of the SLFP and he said the political parties have come to an agreement to select him as the common candidate.

He thanked the main opposition party leader and leader of Opposition Ranil Wickremasinghe for selecting him for the battle.

While thanking the President for winning the war against terrorism, the Health Minister of the Rajapaksa government said the 18th Amendment, deteriorating law and order and democracy were the reasons compelled him to accept the common candidate nomination.

"The 18th Amendment to the Constitution infringes the rights and freedom of the people of this country," Sirisena said. "Corruption and injustice has gripped the country and law and order has fallen," he added.

Minister Sirisena pledged to abolish the executive presidency within 100 days after election to the top post.

He confirmed that opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe would be the Prime Minister.
Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne also expressed his support to Minister Sirisena as the Common Opposition Candidate.

Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, UPFA parliamentarians Prof. Rajiva Wijesinghe, MPs Arjuna Ranatunga, Wasantha Senanayake, M.K.S. Gunawardena and Minister Duminda Dissanayake also attended the press conference.
