Minneriya-Giritale ( often simply called mineria) and Kaudulla neighbouring National Parks located in the Mahaweli region of North Central Province Sri Lanka. Mineral was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1938 and was upgraded to national park in 1997. Kaudulla design was upgraded to national park in 2002. By naming as national park it help to protect the catchment of Minneriya tank and the wildlife of the surrounding. Minneriya and Kaudulla contain prominent irrigation tanks, making them important gathering point of wildlife.
The park is a dry season feeding ground for the elephant population dwelling in forests of Matale, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee districts.
As such the kaudulla Minneriya Jungle corridor, which link the two parks was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 2004 in ensuring wildlife is able to access to both locations.


Climate



Average rainfall of 1,500–2,000 millimetres (59–79 in). The lowest temperature and highest of the park are 20.6 °C (69.1 °F) and 34.5 °C (94.1 °F) respectively.
The wet season lasts during the north eastern monsoon from October to January and from May to September considered as the dry season.




Physical features



Main area situated in dry zone of Sri Lanka and cover approximately 8900 hectares and includes a variety of habitats including secondary forest scrublands, grasslands,montane forests, abandoned chena lands, rocky outcrops,and wetlands. the central future of the park is ancient mineria tank, which was built in the third century by king Mahasen and is primarily fed by the Amban river and Elahara channel.
Kaudulla l is slightly smaller at approximately 6650 Actors in is situated around the ancient Kaudulla tank, also built by King Mahasen. after a period of abandonment the tank was constructed in 1959. Kaudulla has the unique distinction of having two thirds of its land area under water during several months of the year.








Wildlife in the Minneriya



Minneriya and Kaudulla are home to a wide range of flora and fauna. identified as important bird area for 160 bird species both resident and migrant. in addition to birds, the national park are also home to 24 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles, 26 species of fish, nine species of amphibians, and 75 species of butterflies.








The gathering



During the dry season (July – September ), Giant herds of elephants make their way to the receding shores of the Minneriya Tank.,where they can drink bathe and feed on the fresh grass that grows on the newly exposed lake banks. We also take this opportunity to socialized and search for mates. This mega herd, with some animals coming from as far away as trincomalee, can same time number over 300 individuals and is an awe inspiring sight known as “The Gathering “ This is the largest concentration of elephants in the word, as well as one of the greatest spectacles.
