Devil’s Staircase
Trekking
The settlement at an altitude of 570m provides an array of trekking opportunities. Numerous trails amidst tumbling waterfalls, rock pools, gushing streams, abundant wildlife is complemented by fresh & crisp climate, a result of its location in the intermediate Upland zone, a climatically transitional area linking the dry & wet zones. The vegetation consists of moist semi-evergreen forests, tropical savanna forests, dry patana grasslands and montane temperate forests, making it a bio-diversity hotspot, perfect location for nature lovers: it's a diverse floral & faunal wonderland.
Devils's Staircase. That sounds like "The Road to Hell"
Driving up to Horton plains through Devil’s staircase is an extra ordinary adventure. Of course you need a good 4WD vehicle with some four-wheel driving experience. It is said, it is a staircase of devil!
As soon as you get the turn from Badulla road, you will feel the difference; you will feel the change of the atmosphere and nature. While you emerge towards the Bambarakanda fall (i.e. Sri Lanka’s highest water fall), you are in a different world. Near this water fall, you will find one of the nice homely resting places run by a family of planters. My suggestion is to stop there in the first night and hang around the water fall. People at Bambarakanda garden’s restaurant will share their knowledge about the area and historical incidents.
Next day is the most challenging.. while you go up the hills of the misty mountains.. you will find more and more hair-pin bends that take you to the climax of the adventure. You will then realize, most beautiful things of the life are to be achieved with a great effort!
