you can never compare vga s like this, its not only about the vga, each and every component of the PC Effects VGA's Performance same as they do for overall computer performance.

9800gt is better than HD3870 when it comes to gaming performance , benchmark results are another story.

now 9800gtx cards have various model numbers and various performance levels , so it depends on card manufacturer and model.

HD 4870 isnt = gtx 280, 4870 lays between gtx 260 and 280 in most games. but there are some cases which NVIDIA rules , xo the win goes to 260.
