The Sri Lankan navy today arrested 69 people attempting to leave the country illegally for Australia in the seas off Negombo.
The Sri Lankan navy said the group comprised of 48 Tamils, 19 Sinhalese and two Muslims. They were sailing in a fishing trawler named “Asha Duwa”.
It is illegal in Sri Lanka to leave the country from unauthorized ports. The maximum sentence is five years in prison.
