my opinion, best route will be...

Katunayake expressway >> Ja-ela >> Ekala >> Minuwangoda >> Divulapitiya >> Giriulla >> Narammala >> Kurunegala.

If you start your travel around 9~10 in the morning, will take maximum 2 1/2 hrs (mostly ~2 hrs more or less). As schools are closed these days, driving in late morning won't be an issue ne machan. Just ma 2 cents,,,

Best Route - Peliyagoda highway inter exit at Ja ela go through minuwangoda,girulla, narammala to kurunegala

Macho, I don't know this is the shortest path. But I use this whenever I go to Kurunegala. You better go on a weekend morning. Sunday is preferred (Lesser traffic jam). Use the Colombo - Kandy Road. You should be able to drive the vehicle without any hassle using this road. Drive safe.
