Fistly u need a Crossover Type Network Cable macahn.. Then do the steps mentioned
Here comes the network configuration, let’s create a simple network:
Computer A:
IP Address: 10.1.1.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway:
DNS Servers:
Computer B:
IP Address: 10.1.1.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway:
DNS Servers:
Since these 2 computers are directly connected, no gateway and DNS servers are needed.
After assigning IP address, try to ping the other computer from command prompt.

in laptop's network settings, gateway should be 1st com's 2nd IP (connected with laptop)

laptop connects to desktop pc through LAN CROSSOVER CABLE between them (you need to assign IP for each computer,
Desktop PC IP - 192.168.0.2,
subnet mask 255.255.255.0, and gateway 192.168.0.2
Laptop's IP - 192.168.0.3,
subnet 255.255.255.0, and gateway 192.168.0.2
