The Transport Ministry launched a Volvo luxury bus on a one month trial basis, as part of a move to expand Sri Lanka Transport Board’s (SLTB) luxury bus service.

If the trial run proves successful, SLTB will introduce 100 new buses next month. The trial bus has been made available to the Transport Ministry by the Volvo Company. However, ministry source said it is still uncertain from whom the luxury buses will be purchased. The new luxury bus service might be introduced to the Moratuwa-Pettah, Kesbewa-Pettah, Negambo-Pettah, Nittambuwa-Pettah, Kaduwela-Pettah and Homagama-Pettah routes. The price of a luxury bus ticket will be twice the amount of a normal bus fare.

Ministry sources said the new bus service which would be introduced to the Colombo city limits, is expected to limit the number of vehicles entering the Colombo district, and thereby reduce traffic congestion.
