Friday, 20 Mar 2009
The Sri Lankan government will issue a new driving license in accordance with international standards with effect from March 27.
The new license will contain a microchip that will carry the driver’s information, including personal data, digital photograph, fingerprint and digital signature, and the individual's record of traffic offences stored in it.
It will also contain additional information, such as the driver's blood group and medical information.
A streamlined computerized driving license management system will be implemented through the new unit of the Motor Traffic Department in Werahera. Traffic Police, meanwhile, will be provided with reading machines to check on drivers who breach the traffic law.
\With the introduction of the new system, the Registration of Motor Vehicles (RMV) district offices will update details of proven offences to the central database. (TT)
