‘Ninda Noyana Handawe’ by Ranidu and Iraj reproduced in a South Indian film titled ‘Vilaiyattu’ without the artists’ permission
In the past Sri Lankan musicians have gained notoriety copying Indian songs and reproducing them in Sinhalese, however, for the first time in Sri Lankan history, a song produced by Sri Lanka’s number one R‘n’B and Hip Hop duo Ranidu and Iraj has been reproduced without their permission in a brand new Tamil movie titled ‘Vailaiyattu’ which is set to be released in India in two weeks.
The song ‘Nilavennila Indha Thevadhai’ produced by Jassie Gift with vocals by Harish Ragavendra and Sruthi is a carbon copy of the smash hit ‘Ninda Noyana Handawe.’
‘Ninda Noyana Handawe’ topped the Rasa Risi Gee (Sirasa TV) video chart for twelve weeks and it achieved the number one position on radio charts across the Island in 2005. Produced and composed in 2004 by Ranidu and Iraj, for Iraj’s self titled debut album, which was released under the Sony Music / M Entertainment label, it captivated audiences young and old alike with its memorable melody and cutting edge R‘n’B production. The video for the song was critically acclaimed and has currently been viewed by over a million people online and on TV channels across the region.
This is no doubt a testament to the world class standard of Ranidu’s and Iraj’s composition and production skills and also shows how widespread their regional appeal is. However, it is a blow to the future plans of the young duo’s musical careers, as they were planning on releasing a collection of Tamil hits in India in 2008 and ‘Ninda Noyana’ was one of the main singles for this project. In the next few weeks they hope to take action against the perpetrators of this blatant violation of copyrights, proving that copyright laws are not to be taken lightly and is a serious offence when breached. In the meantime we as Sri Lankans should be proud that for the first time in history two of our musicians have gained the status and respect of a wider international community to the extent that their music is copied and reproduced regionally.
Ranidu and Iraj also appeals to all Sri Lankans to support them in their quest to bring to justice the perpetrators of this crime by creating awareness within the worldwide community. “Support homegrown Sri Lankan talent and don’t let them get ripped off by big Indian film producers without being paid any dues,” said Iraj when commenting on the situation.
