Novak Djokovic's visa cancelled, star faces deportation from Australia

Novak Djokovic's visa has been cancelled by Australian Border Force as the top-ranked star faces the real prospect of being forced to leave Australia.

The Serbian star has been detained at Melbourne Airport this morning for more than seven hours.

Djokovic's lawyers are in the process of challenging the decision, two sources familiar with the situation confirmed to The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.

It's understood Djokovic has been separated from his coach Goran Ivanisevic and his support staff have been processed.

The SMH and The Age reports a federal government source familiar with the episode said there had been doubt about whether Djokovic had appropriate documentation to justify his exemption. Unvaccinated people need to show papers at the border before they're given the all clear.

When there is a Law that needs to be followed by everybody. Then only people will have respect .
When this news broke a person asked me why is it wrong to allow him to play if he is negative. Seems fair! But that is not the Law. Any visitor to Aus under Immigration Rules required vaccination (if above 18 or an exemption given under same rules https://covid19.homeaffairs.gov.au/travel-restrictions
If he is not an exempt person under Aus Immigration Rules (they are very specific) , he can be shown the door ! I doubt very much a court action can do much. Rules are clear?
(this is sharp contrast to our leaders ministers etc violating covid rules last year as well as year before. May be our rules are not very specific and leave for flexibility to suit them!)

Category of Visa is not the issue. If he can fall in to any other category he may do so, he may make an application even being detained at port. Whether he could get an exemption under rules or not relating to his vaccination status is the issue. Approval for AO and immigration rules are two different eg You may get a placement in Aus Uni but your visa can be rejected by immigration (even a person holding a Visa can be stopped at the port of entry by immigration and deport. This is used often to stop entry any unwanted person eg terrorist, politically sensitive persons, .Now covid 19 and vaccination issues !

Some reports suggested a member of Djokovic’s team may have filled out the incorrect visa application for him, which does not apply to people who have received vaccination exemptions.
