1. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

In 19th century China, a magical sword given by a warrior to his lover is stolen and the quest to find it ensues. The search leads to the House of Yu where the story travels in a different direction with the introduction of a mysterious assassin and another love story.

If you're new to Asian cinema than this a good movie to begin with. A legendary movie from Ang Lee who also made Life of Pi (2012).

2. Hero (2002)

The storyteller is Nameless (Jet Li), who comes to the imperial court of the dreaded King of Qin (Chen Dao Ming). Qin dreams of uniting all of China's warring kingdoms under his rule; his plans to end war, the opening narration observes, "were soaked in the blood of his enemies." Three assassins have vowed to kill him: Broken Sword (Tony Leung), Flying Snow (Maggie Cheung) and Long Sky (Donnie Yen). Now comes Nameless to claim he has killed all three of them. He wishes to become the king's valued retainer, and collect a reward.

This is the most beautiful movie I've ever watched so far, the cinematography is just amazing.

3. The Host (2006)

A monster emerges from Seoul's Han River and focuses its attention on attacking people. One victim's loving family does what it can to rescue her from its clutches.

Not your typical monster film, this movie is superbly acted and directed.

4. Confessions (2010)

A psychological thriller of a grieving mother turned cold-blooded avenger with a twisty master plan to pay back those who were responsible for her daughter's death.

You will either hate it or love it, but for me it's one of the best Japanese thriller.
