Only 200 teachers reported out of 954 new appointments
By Kelum Bandara and Yohan PereraEducation Minister Susil Premajayantha told Parliament yesterday that out of a total of 954 appointments given during the first week of June, only 200 graduate teachers had reported for duty so far.
The Minister said that all these graduates were recruited to the teachers service based on the schools where the vacancies existed.
He warned that their appointments would be cancelled unless they reported for duty within 14 days.
“These are school-based recruitments. We mentioned it in the gazette notification when calling for applications from them. We will not change this position,” he said.
“They should accept the schools mentioned in their appointment letters.
They can ask for a placement only within the relevant zone, if there are vacancies,” he said.
He said that these teachers could not ask for a school of their choice.
