Announced today at Mobile World Congress, Chinese smartphone manufacturer, Oppo, has a new battery charging technology in the works that it says can take you to 100% charge in just 15 minutes.
It's called Super VOOC and is currently still in the prototyping stage, as such no new devices supporting it were announced. Equally, it doesn't seem backwards compatible to existing phones, so it's going to be exclusive to future Oppo releases.
Essentially it's the company's take on quick charging, only now taken to a pretty extreme level. The live demonstration took place during the press conference, with the prototype phone being charged entirely in the time the presentation took to deliver.
Power is delivered at a consistent 5V, which Oppo says means there's no additional heat issues to worry about, nor should it impact negatively on the life of the battery inside the phone. On a 2500mAh battery, 45% charge can be achieved in just 5 minutes.
The power adapter, cable and connector inside the phone have all been redesigned with "military grade" materials, and additionally pleasing is that it'll support both microUSB and USB-C.
Oppo says it developed the Super VOOC because current battery technology isn't advancing nearly as fast as the rest of the mobile device industry. We all use smartphones more and more, we all want longer lasting batteries. As an alternative to trying to squeeze enormous battery modules into a phone, Oppo is going down the road of charging it insanely fast, so you don't necessarily have to worry about running out.
