Former Minister Sripathi Sooriaarachchi killed in a road accident

Parliamentarian Sripathi Sooriayaarachchi has been killed in a fatal road accident that took place at Madagama, in the Galgamuwa area this afternoon, February 09. According to the police sources the vehicle carrying MP Sooriyaarachchi has crashed into a tree around 1.15.p.m. when it was slipped off the road due to high speed. The vehicle was travelling from Anuradhapura to Colombo on the route via Thambuththegama, said the sources.
Two of the MPs bodyguards have also been killed and another three who were in the vehicle have suffered serious injuries. The injured have been admitted to Thambuththegama hospital, the sources added.
Police said that the road has been slippery due to the prevailing rainy condition in the area, and the MP's vehicle seemed to have lost its control when taking a sharp turn at a very high speed.
Sripathi Sooriaarachchi MP was a former minister and a key figure in the breakaway Sri Lanka Freedom Party (Mahajana) faction. Also, he was a reputed lawyer and a retired Navy officer.

High speed cause of accident – police
Police suspect speeding resulted in the accident which killed Parliamentarian Sripathi Sooriyarachchi and three others including a director of Isura FM Radio. The vehicle he was traveling in veered off the road and hit a tree killing him on the spot.

    Sripathy’s death a coincidence
MP Sripathi Sooriyarachchi met with his tragic death exactly one year after he was stripped of his ministerial portfolio by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on February 9, 2007. The death toll of the accident which claimed his life has also risen to four now.
