The rise and fall of PC House PLC remains one of the most sobering corporate stories in Sri Lanka’s listed retail sector. Once a familiar and trusted name in computers and electronics, PC House began as a single outlet in 1997 and expanded rapidly into a nationwide chain, riding the wave of Sri Lanka’s growing appetite for technology. Its 2010 listing on the Colombo Stock Exchange was greeted with optimism and high expectations, symbolising ambition and confidence in the local IT retail industry.
However, beneath the surface, financial and governance weaknesses were steadily building. Aggressive borrowing, heavy pledging of shares, weak cash flows, and poor financial discipline left the company highly exposed. When market conditions turned and the share price declined sharply, liquidity pressures intensified. Credit lines tightened, suppliers withdrew support, and operations began to stall. Showrooms were gradually closed, staff salaries were delayed, senior management resigned, and revenues plunged as key corporate and government contracts were lost.
Despite last-minute efforts to raise capital and attract new investors, confidence had already eroded beyond repair. Shareholders saw the value of their investments virtually wiped out, while creditors were left facing significant uncertainty over recoveries. The collapse of PC House PLC ultimately serves as a stark reminder that rapid expansion without sound governance, prudent leverage, and transparency can quickly undo even the strongest brands, leaving lasting scars on investors, employees, and the wider capital market.

PC House PLC (operating under the parent entity PCH Holdings PLC) suffered a total financial collapse in the early-to-mid 2010s, leading to legal winding-up proceedings, bankruptcy, and the complete shutdown of its island-wide branch network.

During the late 1990s and 2000s, PC House was one of Sri Lanka’s largest IT retailers and distributors. It was among the first tech chains to aggressively expand outside the Western Province, opening regional branches in outstation commercial hubs like Anuradhapura, Kandy, Kurunegala, and Galle.

Several interrelated factors caused the chain to disappear:

    • Overleveraging and rapid expansion: After listing on the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) around 2010, the company expanded heavily into non-core sectors (including pharmaceutical distribution under PC Pharma and BPO services). This aggressive debt-fueled diversification stretched cash reserves thin.
    • Cash flow crisis and creditor lawsuits: By 2012–2013, the group ran into severe liquidity problems. It failed to settle massive credit lines with local banks as well as international hardware vendors and overseas distributors. Creditors subsequently filed winding-up (liquidation) petitions against PC House in the Commercial High Court of Colombo.
    • Regulatory action and stock delisting: The company repeatedly failed to file required audited financial statements. As a result, the Colombo Stock Exchange suspended trading of its shares, and the company was ultimately delisted.
    • Inventory dry-up and store closures: As vendors cut off supply lines, showrooms across the country—including the Anuradhapura branch—were left with empty shelves, unpaid leases, and unpaid staff salaries. Between 2013 and 2015, every physical retail branch closed permanently.
By the time the retail footprint collapsed, competitors and specialized local dealers took over its former market share. Today, PC House PLC exists only as a case study in corporate overexpansion and financial distress in Sri Lanka's retail IT sector.
