Oh come on , free education is a burden all right, but it's not the worst burden SL have to endure is it? Government can hardly maintain the parliament but we don't see parliament members getting budget cuts or whatever do we? And I have a friend with AAB in maths who can't get in to engineering just because he is from colombo. So I know the situation.
There should be a way for the people who have passed A/L to get higher education if they want to do it.
It should not be limited to the lesser percentage who have scored high from A/Ls.
Why are you only talking about the people who are closer to the cutoff mark, what about others?
Shouldn't they have a fair chance if they want to continue with their education?

Free education is not a burden to the country. we only sped below 5% on that. there are more things in this country which should be fixed.
these idiots are not talking to the point. the point should not be about the medical college closing or taking it under the govt. the point should be how the quality should be maintained in the course. as per available information there is a huge hole in the quality of the current SAITM course. then people should talk about how to fix that. closing is not the solution.
if the people feel that professors will leave for better salary, the solution is to increase the govt salaries and to promote more researches in the country. then the good people will join so that they can build up their name via researches. pvt uni will not touch that area.

Yes quality of courses should be regulated and maintained by a party(UGC I guess).
I don't know about other private institutes. But in SLIIT, they are building 2 x 15 story building for the engineering faculty and some other faculties.
Mostly for labs. There will be more than enough laboratories with up to date facilities for research. And SLIIT is actively promoting research for 4th year students.
And the senior academic staff is required to carry out their own research with junior academic team members. They are fully funded by SLIIT. Again I don't know much about other institutes.
