Again, the debate on this very important subject is on the cards. Here is an analysis on this issue.

 • Why state university students in protest against the setting up of private universities?

1. Many undergraduates study to earn later, not only for mere knowledge. So, they fear of facing the increased competition for employment, created as a result of higher turn out rate.
2. State university undergraduates are the cream of the cream. So, they should be secured with their jobs.
3. There is a question whether the quality will be compromised for money, meaning that any stupid having money can become a graduate.

 • Why would the government like to open more private universities?
1. Parents who can afford keep on sending their children overseas for higher education, which amounts to a substantial foreign exchange outflow.
2. Some parents even mortgage their assets to make money for their children’s higher education in overseas due to high cost.
3. Most foreign graduates settle down abroad, thus there is no return on investment to the country.
4. In a democratic country, no one should be barred from leaning a legitimate subject that he or she wishes

 • So, what steps should a sensible government take in this connection.
1. Analyze the current job markets both in Sri Lanka and abroad. Identify what skills or knowledge (ශිල්ප /ශාස්ත්*ර) they require. Accordingly guide both state and private universities to offer demanding academic courses.
2. Encourage students to learn more skills needed by the world than to get mere knowledge.
3. Maintain the quality of private and state universities, by proper monitoring and regulation.
4. Encourage and widen avenues for foreign skilled employment

 • Then, what shall state university students do?
1. Think about this important issue in a wider perspective.
2. Don’t stick to the idea that the government shall do everything for us.
3. Make use of the opportunity for free education to harvest the best.
