Take the Rs.20 black cd to the linux center and get your copy from them. They dont charge you for that. Go in your school kit and they might throw in an extra cd for free.

I have intel G31 graphics all the linux distros that i had at home(i used on my previous 845G graphics well) doesn't bring up the GUI of linux, I dont know much to get around with the terminal to start xserver manually only a lil' bit on the terminal.
If anyone here can tell me how to bring up xserver i'd be very thankful and does the new ubuntu release has drivers for G31 graphics? i requested a live CD on the site :P

its very simple to stop and start the X server

First u have to go to run level where the x server is not use such as run level 2
    Ctrl + alt + F2

Type this on the terminal to stop the x server...this is only for Gnome for KDE use kdm instead of gdm

    sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

To start the x server again

    sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

Thats it.. i have made a Tut for installing nvidia driver for Debian based Distros..it might help..

    hey whts ur linux distro???

Just shifted to Debian Lenny. I'm usually a Debian guy but with this laptop I was going through Fedora 8 & 9, Linux Mint, Mandriva and finally was using Ubuntu 8.04. When they rolled out the 2.6.26 kernel in Lenny I switched to Debian Lenny. :)

KDE 4 is still buggy. Better to wait till its stable before using it on a production machine.

Hellow but thats KDE 4..im talking abt KDE 4.1.1 they have fixed all the bugs that has plagued the initial release as far as i can tell KDE 4.1 is stable as it can get....have u even tried it.

    I should've written 4.x.x since I meant KDE4 branch in general.
Yes I tried KDE4.1.1 on Ubuntu 8.10 (last distro before switching to Lenny). After KDE loaded the keyboard went haywire. The Arrow keys stopped working in KDE (specifically the Up and Down keys) and a few KDE programs did crash.

it could be machine specific. My laptop isnt the most *nix friendly model out there.
For example, Etch simply can't find the hdd or the ethernet network card in this, let alone the wifi card.

one lil' question, though intel supports grapihcs on linux is it enough? i mean they say that their driver doesnt run on xserver 1.5 only 1.4 and it's branches...does this mean theres no drivers for newer distros? :( though i have 16x PCIe slot i still have to beg dad for a new graphics card thats not gonna work:P
