Whenever I install an OS (after a total format of course), these are the stuff I do:

- Disable services
- Disable all startup programs
- Tweak TCP/IP settings
- Run CCleaner in Safe Mode
- Run Registry Mechanic
- Run UltimateDefrag in Safe Mode
- Run boot time UltimateDefrag

Even after I did all that, my FRESH Vista installation was eating up resources like crazy. Was using WAY more resources that XP SP3. I only left services which Vista NEEDED to function, EVERYTHING else was disabled.

Needless to say, I went back to XP SP3.

So basically, even after tweaking the hell out of your Vista, it'll still use quite a lot of resources.

My opinion is to wait for 7, then install that.

Hey guys, i have 5gb of ram installed at the moment on XP 32bit OS. After a googling for sometime; found out that i had to move to a 64bit OS to get the maximum out of the ram as 32bit sups only 3.5gb of ram max. I mostly use multimedia apps such as PS, Illustrator, Premier Pro, After Effects etc..

1)Will it be a good move for me to switch to the 64bit OS?

2) Shall I go for Xp or Vista?

Yes If u want to use whole 5GB of ur RAM definetly you need to put a 64bit OS...
Coz 32bit OS dont hav the capability of addressing the whole 5GB memory...

If u r using the softwares like u mentioned above u better use the XP , Coz Vista takes lot of space in HDD and lot of RAM also...
:)
