Yeah, a replay attack may work if the manufacturer hasn't implemented proper rolling codes (code/encryption used between key fob and car would change frequently). Most new cars use rolling codes, some makes/models may still be vulnerable though.

In simple terms, it`s called a relay attack. A signal repeater/amplifier is required to amplify the weak signal (i.e. from the transponder/key kept inside a house), confusing the car to think that the Key is nearby.

A simple faraday case/signal blocker can be used to keep the transponder key inside the house. I keep my spare key wrapped in aluminum foil just in case.

There`s another complicated method called CAN Injection which dont actually need any signal from an existing key though.

Thanks for the explanation, however if the car has a security system with engine immobalizer, thieves can drive the car only up to the radius of this gadget can receive the signal from the key right, one they dirive outside the radius the immobalizer should work and stop the car giving the message car is not detected?

Aftermarket immobilisers may have a function to do this. There are all sorts of functions availabe with aftermarket systems.

But with the factory/standard set-up, the Key can stay out of the car whilst the car is running. So with a standard car they can basically run the car until it's stopped using the Stop button inside.
