Shafeek Rajabdeen the former provincial councilor and leader of the SLMC team that contested the Colombo District at the 2004 general election on the UNP ticket is tipped to fill the vacancy created by the tragic death of MP Maheswaran. Rajabdeen entered into an electoral pact with the UNP at the 2004 election and was next in line after Maheswaran in the preferential vote list.
