Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has warned of a "conspiracy" to downgrade the victory achieved by Sri Lankan forces against the LTTE and said he was prepared to appear before any judiciary on their behalf who heeded his orders during the civil war.

Rajapaksa said no security personnel who heeded his orders as the Commander in Chief of the armed forces of Sri Lanka to liberate the Northern and Eastern Province from LTTE needed to worry about any conspiracy against them.

"I am prepared to take the full responsibility of those orders and appear before any judiciary on their (forces') behalf," he said, while addressing state bank officials and youth representatives of Galle district here on Saturday.

"The President said there is conspiracy after conspiracy to downgrade the heroic feat achieved by the armed forces. It should be remembered that the soldiers fought bravely by taking orders from him and he would go to any judiciary on behalf of them," a report on the Defence Ministry quoted Rajapaksa as saying.

He said the "freedom" won by sacrificing 26,000 lives will never be betrayed by anybody.

"In this heroic struggle another 5,000 youth also lost their limbs in these regions during the prolonged LTTE battle," the President said.

On the economic front, the President said his government was clearly fulfilling its responsibilities in further strengthening of the economy.

He said his government would not allow privatisation of state banks and would focus on strengthening them.
