Obviously after winning 10 games and finishing on top of the table is a huge achievement. But sport can be cruel at times, they only remember the team that wins at the end of it all.
But you know it can happen sometimes when you get into a one-off semi-final kind of a situation. We were first in the round robin league but the final result does have a disappointing effect on the side.
Someone reminded me that it was similar to what happened to New Zealand in the 1992 World Cup. Even then New Zealand side had finished on top in the league stage and then lost in the semis for a heartbreaking moment. I hadn't thought of it like that, but there are some similarities. But the year 1992 is a long time away from 2009.
The fact is that we just did not play as well under pressure. We were undone by an amazing innings from Gilchrist which won the game for Deccan Chargers. There is bound to be a lot of disappointment of not making it to the title round despite doing well in the round robin.
But it was a marked improvement from last year in terms of where we finished as a team. We did make the semifinals but it wasn't in as convincing a fashion as this. I wasn't there last year when we made the semifinals, so I cannot understand the hurt of some of the players who have had to experience two times in a year.
Some have been surprised at how the two bottom placed teams from last year have made the final this year. But everybody have forgotten that the two semi-finalists from last year Chennai and Delhi made it yet again to knockout underlining their quality. If you look at Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers Bangalore it has been all about great individual performances guiding them through. For Bangalore Ross Taylor has been exceptional and for Deccan Chargers guys like Gilchrist and Rohit Sharma have done well.
But it is also time to take a look at the guys who have impressed me during the course of the tournament. Abhishek Nayar when we came up against Mumbai Indians showed that he had the ability. Delhi Daredevils had Dinesh Karthik who showed that he is a fine player and can be a very good batsman to boot, which he can show if he gets a chance. That's been the great part of being part of the IPL, because young guys who would never have got a chance to be part of such a big stage and show their talent.
Personally I had mixed feeling about this year's IPL, because I really started well and bowled well. But unfortunately an injury to Virender meant that I couldn't fit into the team because we needed an extra batsman. I never got a chance to make more of a contribution.
There have been suggestions that we should maybe look at increasing the number of overseas players in a playing XI to overcome such situations. I know people have been talking about it because of a lot of stars like Glenn McGrath could not play a single game. But I guess there are two ways to look at it. You can say it is an Indian competition and is deigned to bring through Indian players and an opportunity to show their wares. Other side would be saying if we could increase the foreign players it would reduce the number of stars sitting on the sidelines.
My suggestion would be either we could bring down the number of overseas players on the roster from 10 to eight or have an additional foreign player in the XI. This could be one way of satisfying most of the people. Over to you. (TCM)
