Ranil takes wing on dubious tour

Opposition and UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe is scheduled to make another controversial tour of Europe.

Local political sources said the main aim of his European tour is to hold discussions with several Scandinavian officials on the situation in Sri Lanka and a strategy to save the LTTE leadership now trapped in Mullaitivu.

In a desperate attempt to exert more international pressure on the Government to go for a ceasefire with the LTTE terrorists. Wickremesinghe intends to paint a gloomy picture of Sri Lanka to the international community. Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said the Opposition Leader appears to be playing a new role as the international spokesman for the LTTE terrorists. “I have pointed this out in Parliament too. It was Anton Balansingham who campaigned for the LTTE internationally in the past. Since his death, the LTTE got Siva Pasupathi to do that job. But since their international campaign got weakened, the LTTE has got Wickremsesinghe to act as their international spokesman,” the Minister said.


Minister Aluthgamage said the UNP leader, who has lost 19 elections in a row, including two Presidential elections, is making desperate attempts to get political mileage and regain power at any cost. “Wickremesinghe is responsible for the current international pressure that is mounting and calls for a ceasefire. Over the past several months, the UNP leader has been globe trotting tarnishing the image of our country and discrediting our Security Forces which have been doing a commendable job. The Opposition Leader has done a considerable damage to the country,” he said.



He added that the UNP leader could not win the confidence of the eighty odd Parliamentarians elected at the last General Election. He has only 43 remaining in the UNP and out of that, 23 MPs are supporting the Security Forces’ current humanitarian operation. “The UNP is now divided. But their leader is still playing his old game and making desperate attempts to hang on to the top seat of the party,” the Minister added.
Minister Aluthgamage said all loyal, patriotic and peace-loving citizens, irrespective of their political affiliations, should reject this type of opportunities.



“I am sure Wickremesinghe is on another dubious mission to discredit the country, slow down military operations and save Prabhakaran.
People would teach a good lesson to such politicians at the next general and Presidential elections,” he concluded.

Members of key political parties and civil society representatives termed the intended European visit of UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as an expedition of a slave to place his woes to his masters.
They voiced their anger over his purported European visit to educate the Scandinavian countries of the situation in Sri Lanka. They said this type of action by UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe showcases his servility to the colonial masters after 61 years of independence.
Ven Elle Gunawansa Thera said the UNP leader is a slave who betrayed his native land to the colonial masters. “There is no single occasion when a Sri Lankan leader pointed fingers at their political rivals in foreign countries except Ranil,” he said.
The Thera said the UNP leader has forgotten that Sri Lanka is a sovereign country and Sri Lankans have the complete freedom to decide their own destiny.
“We may have problems and political rivalry in the country but they should be discussed and solved within the country. The UNP leader is in the habit of telling all problems to the international community to win their sympathy,” the Thera said.
Urban and Sacred Area Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said the Opposition leader has decided to educate the European leader at a time when the Security Forces have almost eradicated terrorism.
“The Forces have evacuated more than 150,000 civilians and the Government has taken all steps to ensure the safety and the welfare of civilians who came to the cleared areas.
He attempted to canvass on the issues related to GSP+ and made every effort to deprive the country of all GSP+ benefits.
“The UNP Leader is a disgrace to the members of the Security Forces who made the supreme sacrifice to save the country from terrorism. Sri Lanka lives in a new age not in an age of under colonialism.”
The Minister said the Opposition Leader should get out of this colonial mentality and support the Government to fully implement the mandate given by the people of Sri Lanka. “The Government is bound to implement the mandate given by the people. The opposition should support this endeavor,” the Minister said.

What Ranil should do is not this kind of stupid things and he should get international support to sri lanka at this event. What is he expecting. still not understood what he should do? this is not the patriatism. this is the greediness for power. when ranil has inculcated that LTTE cant be defeated in the sri lankan mind set, it was mahinda who had backbone to act against the war by identifying exactly who is Praba. Still ranil does not understand the gravity of the acts he had done and he is doing. mahinda has to beg for fund because of the war handed over to him by ranil. so he has to help raising funds.
