The United National Party said today it was considering fielding a separate candidate from the UNP at the forthcoming presidential elections.

UNP national leader Ranil Wickremesinghe told a group meeting this morning that Ven. Maduluwawe Sobotha Thera would not contest as the common candidate despite moves to convince him to do so.

Mr. Wickremesinghe suggested countrywide protest should be organised like the ‘Jana Bala Meheyuma’ from June this year against the Government.

He said that another no confidence motion would be presented against the Government apart from the one which was brought today.

Mr. Wickremesinghe said it would be presented because the Government was planning to shift the five casinos which were operating in the country to the proposed Hotel complex at D.R. Wijeyawardane Mavatha by breaking its earlier promise.

I think people underestimate Ranil. In 2005, he got 48% (Mahinda 50%). In contrast (Mahinda 58% Sarath 40%) in 2010 election. He got power in 2001 and help to enhance economy in Chandrika's rule.

Whoever in opposition, government media try to destroy him or her. That is normal for past 20-30 years.

The problem is the inside enemy in his party. I do not want to say. You know him. The inside enemy wants to get power in UNP, but he did not understand that party is also ruining.

Mahinda alone is not powerful at all. He is strong as his family (Gota, Chamal .....etc) supports him. That is his strength. But unfortunately Rail is being destroyed by some party members inside.
